Sejong autonomous driving demonstration project begins in earnest
Laying the foundation for commercializing passenger shuttle services
5G millimeter wave infrastructure needed in special zones for V2X


The Ministry of SMEs and Startups and Sejong Special Self-Governing City announced that they have launched the 'Sejong Autonomous Driving Demonstration Project' on the 25th to ensure the safety of autonomous vehicles.

On this day, Minister of SMEs and Startups Park Young-sun visited Sejong Central Park, a demonstration site for autonomous driving in an urban park, held a communication meeting with the Sejong mayor, the head of the Happiness Agency, and autonomous driving companies, and inspected safety through on-site test drives.

In the meantime, Sejong Special Zone has focused on ensuring safety by producing autonomous vehicles to prepare for autonomous driving demonstrations in three sections (downtown park, residential complex, and general roads), improving vehicle location measurement technology, establishing a safety manual, forming a safety inspection committee, and subscribing to liability insurance.

In addition, to support verification, an autonomous driving big data control system utilizing AI technology was built at the Sejong City Industry-Academia-Research Cluster Center, and a dedicated autonomous driving road and safety facilities (emergency situation detectors, pedestrian detectors, etc.) were created in Central Park.

The park will be the first in Korea to demonstrate an autonomous shuttle service within a large-scale urban park, and plans to sufficiently demonstrate the domestically produced autonomous vehicle manufactured by Unmanned Solution Co., Ltd. before the opening of Central Park in September. Once safety is secured, citizens will be able to experience it firsthand when the park opens.

On the road, AI Mobility Co., Ltd.'s low-speed autonomous driving vehicle will be tested in a residential complex near Sejong Tech Valley, and in September, Autonomous A2G Co., Ltd.'s high-speed autonomous driving vehicle will be tested on a BRT road, and various vehicle types will be deployed to discover a commercialization model for autonomous driving services suitable for Sejong City's traffic conditions.

Minister Park Young-sun emphasized at the meeting, “For autonomous driving V2X, 5G 28Ghz millimeter wave (mmWave) infrastructure must be incorporated into the Sejong Special Zone,” and “We need to vitalize new digital industries based on 5G through public-private cooperation.”

Meanwhile, the Jeonnam e-Mobility Regulatory Free Zone will also begin a demonstration project to ensure driving safety by prohibiting entry of ultra-small electric vehicles in the Aphae Bridge area (Mokpo-si, Jeonnam-si to Sinan-gun) starting on the 25th, and plans to sequentially demonstrate safety improvements and technological developments in various e-mobility modes.
