Securing local new renewable energy sources
Contributing to achieving Japan's decarbonization goals
Recently, as competition in AI technology intensifies and the construction of AI data centers accelerates, power consumption is rapidly increasing, and securing sustainable energy is emerging as an important issue. In the midst of this, global digital infrastructure company Equinix is accelerating the construction of eco-friendly data centers by signing the first renewable energy power purchase agreement (PPA) in Japan.
Global digital infrastructure company Equinix announced on the 2nd that it has signed the first renewable energy power purchase agreement (PPA) in Japan with Trina Solar Japan Energy, securing 30MW of renewable power.
The contract will run for 20 years, starting in 2028, and will supply renewable energy from the Yufutsu Abira Solar Project in Hokkaido, contributing to Equinix’s global sustainability goals.
Through this renewable energy investment, Equinix aims to secure new renewable energy sources in the local markets it enters and contribute to achieving Japan’s decarbonization goals. In particular, we plan to strengthen Equinix’s renewable energy procurement strategy in Japan by actively participating in increasing the renewable energy capacity of Japan’s power grid.
“As our reliance on digital technologies such as AI increases, the demand for data center energy is also increasing,” said Kuniko Ogawa, Country Director of Equinix Japan. “This first PPA in Japan will allow customers to pursue their decarbonization goals while knowing that the energy consumed to operate their data centers is covered by renewable energy.”
He also emphasized, “We will improve the quality of renewable energy coverage through investment in new renewable energy projects and contribute to the development of Japan’s sustainable digital economy.”
“This collaboration will empower us to provide sustainable energy solutions and support our efforts to transition Japan’s electricity sector to clean energy,” said Chen Feng, Japan Representative Director and Country Manager for Trina Solar’s International Systems Business Unit. “The Hokkaido solar farm will contribute to Equinix’s renewable energy initiatives and strengthen our vision for solar power in Japan.”
Meanwhile, this contract is Equinix’s first renewable energy PPA in Japan, and it takes into account the characteristics of the Japanese market where renewable energy procurement is difficult. Equinix has already achieved 100% renewable energy coverage in its data centers in Japan, and it is reported that this contract will add new renewable energy capacity to the local power grid and improve the quality of renewable energy.
