No need to change SIM cards, remote switching between network operators possible
STMicroelectronics, a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, is taking a bold step forward in massive IoT device management with a new embedded SIM that can enable secure asset tracking and data processing without the need for SIM card replacement in billions of devices in smart homes, smart factories, and smart cities.
STMicroelectronics today announced the launch of the ST4SIM-300, the industry’s first embedded SIM meeting the new GSMA standard for eSIM IoT deployments.
This new standard, also known as SGP.32, introduces special features to make it easier to manage IoT devices connected to cellular networks.
“Based on the new GSMA specifications, our ST4SIM-300 embedded SIM for IoT makes it easier to switch between network operators, simplifies management of many connected devices, and improves overall flexibility,” said Agostino Vanore, Marketing Manager for Edge Authentication and M2M Cellular at ST. “Today’s increased connectivity and enhanced security requirements provide the ability to seamlessly track assets globally, connect smart devices to the cloud, and securely manage data from billions of devices. “This will provide essential support for healthcare, smart infrastructure, cities, factories, and home environments,” he said.
Designed to meet the latest requirements of the IoT environment, the IoT-specific eSIM (SGP.32) is differentiated from the existing eSIM M2M (Machine-to-Machine) and eSIM Consumer specifications.
ST's ST4SIM-300 product takes automation of Remote SIM Provisioning to the next level, providing the ability to easily manage SIM profiles across large numbers of devices and remotely switch between network operators without the need to physically swap SIM cards.
This innovative eSIM complies with the latest 5G specifications and facilitates deployment of devices with limited user interfaces and low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) devices.
ST is offering samples of the ST4SIM-300 eSIM in a variety of formats, including a Wafer-Level Chip-Scale Package (WLCSP) suitable for smart meters, GPS trackers, asset monitoring systems, remote sensors, and medical wearables.
Equipped with ST’s secure microcontroller that has received EAL6+ certification, the ST4SIM-300 has a security-by-default design architecture. This eSIM is compatible with the GSMA IoT SAFE applet, making it easy to add security elements required for terminal-to-terminal communication and enabling IoT device developers to adjust the level of security based on design.
