Open smart home device linkage standard technology
CSA, actively commercializing… Samsung SmartThings and Amazon
Support for the Matter standard on Google Nest and Android devices is expected to enable users to easily connect their smart home devices.
Google announced on the 15th that it has enabled Matter support for Nest and Android devices.
Matter is an open smart home linkage standard that allows smart home devices from various brands to be linked and used together. For example, Samsung Electronics uses SmartThings and LG Electronics uses ThinQ to link products on each platform. If the Matter standard is applied, Samsung Electronics products can be controlled on ThinQ as well. Users can also register and use one device on multiple platforms at the same time.
Samsung's SmartThings is a platform that allows you to control smart devices from apps. Shortly after Matter's official launch, Samsung announced that it would be easy to add devices set up with SmartThings to Google, and vice versa. At the Samsung Software Developer Conference last November, it was announced that they were actively participating in the commercialization of Matter.
Google said that Google Home speakers, Google Home Mini, Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Nest Hub (1st and 2nd gen, max), and Nest WiFi Pro can act as a hub for Matter to control without needing to download and install updates.
Google also announced that it is rolling out Matter support for Fast Pair on Android, which will provide the ability to easily pair to your home network.
Once connected, this feature makes it easy to connect Matter devices to apps and the smart home ecosystem. Additionally, Nest Wi Pro, Nest Hub Max, and Nest Hub (2nd gen) have been updated to act as Thread border routers, allowing products that support Thread, a networking protocol for low-power devices like smart locks, to connect to your home network.
Meanwhile, the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), to which Google belongs, has been working on the Matter standard since 2019 to solve the problem of fragmentation in the smart home space. Amazon, which is also a member of the CSA, is expected to support the standard from the end of December by introducing 17 Echo devices.
“There are very few products that support Matter today, but more will be coming in early 2023,” a Google representative said. Any device that supports the standard will display the Matter badge, which will be rolled out to Google products and all other Matter devices immediately.
