The 'Matter' standard, which supports connectivity between smart home devices in Korea, is beginning to expand in earnest.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), a global standardization association for smart homes, will hold a regular meeting from the 20th to the 23rd at the Conrad Hotel in Seoul, inviting over 500 members from 134 member companies to discuss important technical topics for implementing smart homes, such as matter standards and data privacy.

Matter is a standard smart home protocol created by leading companies in the smart home market, including Google, Apple, and Amazon. Through Matter, smart home devices are interoperable and interconnected using various communication technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Thread.

CSA is an organization that develops and standardizes Matter, and this event is the first meeting held since the announcement of the Matter standard version 1.0 in October last year. It is expected to be an opportunity for companies to review the status of application since the announcement of Matter, discuss strategies, and for the Matter standard to expand in earnest.

Samsung Electronics participates in this event as a member company. Samsung Electronics has been releasing smart TVs, smart monitors, and SmartThings Stations that support Matter since the early development of the Matter standard.

Samsung Electronics will introduce a SmartThings platform strategy that is suitable for the Matter standard and showcase key functions such as automation through the SmartThings Station product. Samsung Electronics Device Platform Center Vice President Jae-yeon Jeong said, “SmartThings is leading the popularization of IoT by incorporating Matter technology into the recently launched SmartThings Station,” and “Samsung Electronics will actively participate in the establishment of Matter standards based on the SmartThings platform and actively seek collaboration between companies.”

LG Electronics also participated in this event as a member company and emphasized evolution, connection, and openness as the vision of the smart home platform 'LG ThinQ'. LG Electronics has supported easy control of various Matter-certified home appliances and IoT devices in the home through LG ThinQ.

LG Electronics Platform Business Center Vice President Jeong Ki-hyun said, "A true smart home experience that breaks down the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces is ultimately about LG ThinQ existing around us like air through 'ambient computing' technology, providing the best environment tailored to each individual's characteristics without customers having to be aware of various devices and technologies."

The industry expects that products supporting the Matter standard will be fully launched in 2023.

If the Matter standard becomes widespread, device manufacturers will be able to reduce costs by only developing products that support Matter. Users will also be able to use the platform that provides the most optimal service for them without being tied to a platform. Ultimately, the spread of the Matter standard is expected to enable the creation of a user-friendly environment.
