At Europe's largest home appliance exhibition 'IFA 2023', Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics presented technologies and services that add innovation to consumers' daily lives.
'IFA 2023' is Europe's largest home appliance exhibition held in Berlin, Germany from the 1st to the 5th.
This year, Samsung Electronics presented an integrated connection experience based on SmartThings and eco-friendly technologies for a sustainable future under the theme of ‘Connection that matters.’
LG Electronics unveiled a number of premium home appliances and energy solutions for a sustainable daily life under the slogan, “Sustainable Life, Joy for All.”
■ Samsung Electronics, Realizing Meaningful Connections for the Environment, People, and Future The 'Matters' put forward by Samsung Electronics also refers to Matter, an open smart home interconnection standard. Samsung Electronics is using Matter and the HCA standard. Supports expanding consumer device choices and collaborates with WWST (Works with SmartThings) certified partners.
At this year’s IFA 2023, Samsung Electronics emphasized various partnerships for organic connections between people, technology, and the environment, focusing on the consumer’s experience of connecting products. To this end, it created a SmartThings and Sustainability Zone in collaboration with 15 partner companies on the themes of ▲Home Control and Security ▲Health and Wellness ▲Entertainment.
Samsung Electronics implemented a home monitoring service by linking SmartThings with its partner ABB’s platform and integrating lighting, air conditioning, door locks, etc. on a single wallpad. It also introduced the ‘Samsung Food’ service, which provides customized recipes based on the food AI platform and connects to e-commerce services.

Samsung Electronics is focusing on developing energy-saving solutions based on SmartThings, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The exhibition that day also introduced energy-saving solutions that emphasize the environment. Examples include: △Eco-friendly package △Solar cell remote △Application of recycled materials such as waste PET in the Galaxy Z Flip 5 △Development of a course and filter to reduce microplastics applied to washing machines in collaboration with Patagonia △'AI Saving Mode' that automatically switches to power-saving mode △'Carbon Intensity Insight' for participation in carbon reduction △'Net Zero Home Solution' that manages 'Auto DR' that allows power use during peak power hours.
In particular, at this IFA 2023, SmartThings experience zones will be operated throughout Berlin, and the Tiny House, a single-person household concept, will be showcased. Built as a ‘Net Zero Home’, an eco-friendly future housing type, the Tiny House features various Samsung Electronics technologies and home appliances, as well as products from SmartThings partners.
In addition, Samsung Electronics also introduced premium home appliances that have improved energy efficiency and performance with its own technology and AI functions. These include: △ A washing machine with an 'Ecobubble' function, △ A 'Bespoke AI Oven' that recognizes ingredients with an internal camera and suggests recipes, and △ An AI cordless stick vacuum cleaner, 'Bespoke Jet AI'. ■ LG Electronics Unveils Solutions Focused on Sustainability LG Electronics has focused more on energy solutions for sustainable daily life. First of all, ESG factors were reflected in the planning stage of the exhibition hall and recyclable fabric and mesh materials were applied.
At IFA 2023, LG Electronics introduced home energy solutions such as smart cottages, high-energy efficiency products, and ultra-personalized products and services tailored to various lifestyles.
LG Electronics also unveiled a futuristic home called 'Smart Cottage'. This is a highly efficient energy technology-intensive home solution. It is equipped with a 4-kilowatt (kW) solar panel roof that produces some of its own energy, the 'Therma V Monobloc' heat pump heating and cooling system that is excellent for reducing energy consumption, an objet collection washing tower compact, a dishwasher, an induction electric range, and a water purifier.
Next to the space, the Net Zero Vision House was built to emphasize the vision of a smart home energy solution. Visitors can experience energy control and management technologies implemented according to various energy usage situations in daily life. They can see the process of energy produced by solar panels or remaining energy used at home being stored and consumed in ESS, and can control home appliances and monitor energy storage and consumption through the LG ThinQ app.

On this day, LG Electronics exhibited a large number of products using recycled plastic materials. The 'Universal Kit', an accessory that helps customers easily use LG Electronics products, was introduced for the first time. This is a product that uses recycled plastic considering the circular economy, and is attached to products such as refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, cordless vacuum cleaners, and water purifiers in the exhibition space. Additionally, a plastic knot-making event was held for visitors using resin pallets processed from waste plastic collected from the Chilseo Recycling Center.
Meanwhile, in July, LG Electronics unveiled 'UP Appliances 2.0' and announced its ambition to transform from a home appliance manufacturing company to a service and subscription-oriented smart home solution provider. To this end, it also created a venue to experience ultra-personalized home appliances.
