Third year industry-academia cooperation, joint research on high-efficiency technology and new materials
A total of 14 projects completed after signing industry-academia cooperation agreements in 2021
Samsung Electronics continues its industry-academia collaboration with Korea University to develop eco-friendly home appliance solutions.
On the 30th of last month, Samsung Electronics and Korea University signed a third-year industry-academic cooperation agreement for the 'Eco-Friendly Energy Research Center' at the Korea University Creative Center in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. The event was attended by Vice President Wi Hoon of Samsung Electronics' DA Business Division and Professor Lee Ho-seong of Korea University, who is the head of the research center.
Samsung Electronics established an eco-friendly energy research center with Korea University in late 2021 and has been conducting joint research by discovering tasks related to high-efficiency energy technology and new materials.
As of last year, the Eco-Friendly Energy Research Center has completed a total of 14 projects, including the development of anti-icing coating materials for heat exchangers to reduce energy usage and refrigerator foaming technology.
This year, the third year, researchers from various departments, including mechanical engineering, smart mobility, convergence biotechnology, and new materials engineering, plan to participate and study a total of nine tasks.
The research areas of industry-academia cooperation are largely divided into: △improving energy efficiency of core components of major home appliances, △developing technologies to expand the use of recycled materials such as recycled plastics, and △developing anti-fouling materials and high-efficiency insulating materials.
The two sides are currently holding a college student idea contest to encourage interest in next-generation home appliances and foster talent in related fields, and plan to hold specialized technical workshops and seminars in the future.
“Samsung Electronics and Korea University have been collaborating since 2021 to research core technologies for next-generation home appliances, such as high-efficiency energy technology and renewable materials,” said Vice President Wi Hoon, head of the Advanced Development Team at Samsung Electronics’ DA Business Division. “We will continue to work to discover innovative technologies that can be applied to various home appliances.”
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is expanding cooperation with leading domestic universities to preemptively secure technologies to be applied to next-generation home appliances. We are currently conducting industry-academic cooperation to jointly develop core component technologies such as compressors and motors by establishing the 'Future Home Appliance Drive Technology Center' with Seoul National University in 2021, and recently launched the 'High-Efficiency Peltier Cooling Research Consortium' with researchers from Sungkyunkwan University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Yonsei University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Kongju National University.
