Examining Entry into Perplexity Hardware Market

Reviewing Development of New Voice Recognition Product
Aravind Srinivas, founder and CEO of AI search engine Perplexity, is considering launching new hardware equipment. He posted on social media platform X about plans to create a "simple, under $50" device capable of answering questions with "voice-to-voice" interaction, stating that if the post receives more than 5,000 likes, he will proceed with sales. The post indeed garnered significant attention, and Srinivas officially announced that development would proceed.
Appeal of Hardware Among AI Startups
Hardware has recently attracted significant interest among prominent AI startups. This is not only due to the symbolic value hardware carries, but also because of its potential to enable new interactions through AI-centric new devices. For example, art generator Midjourney has established a hardware team, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is currently working on an AI hardware project with former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
Difficulties in Achieving Successful Hardware Ventures
The hardware sector presents many challenges. Even Rabbit's R1, cited as a recent success case, is being traded in the secondhand market at significant discounts. Although Rabbit claims to have sold approximately 130,000 units by June, it has yet to implement many features advertised prior to launch. Another AI device startup, Humane, has experienced product recalls and is seeking acquirers following the failure of its Ai Pin, which was promoted as a smartphone replacement.
Perplexity's Potential Backed by Substantial Funding
Perplexity possesses significant capital and is preparing to secure an additional $500 million in funding. While this is an important factor for hardware success, based on past cases, numerous elements must align for success to be achieved.
