LiDAR·ToF

Quest 2:

Quest 4: LiDAR·ToF

■ Project Completion Overview

We have developed a disaster reconnaissance robot for exploring confined spaces by combining three wheel-type driving modules with two articulated joints. Centered on a Raspberry Pi, we integrated DC motors, high-torque servo motors, LiDAR, ToF sensors, and a power system, with a structure enabling left/right steering and chassis attitude adjustment through the articulated joints.

Through manual operation code, we implemented forward/reverse movement, speed control, and articulated steering functions, and adjusted motor direction, output variance, and articulation center angles through iterative testing. Subsequently, utilizing LiDAR and ToF sensor data to determine front obstacles and left/right clearance space, we developed an automatic obstacle avoidance driving function capable of navigating around obstacles.

■ Key Achievements and Features

We initially modeled and 3D-printed SAW structure and track-driven structures, reviewed assemblability and operational feasibility, and improved the design to a final structure combining wheel-type modules with articulated joints based on tolerance and power transmission issues identified during manufacturing.

The final structure features not only basic driving using wheels but also the capability to change the direction of travel and chassis attitude through articulation. We implemented functionality to determine front obstacles and left/right clearance space by linking LiDAR sensor information with driving control, and to automatically determine the avoidance direction.

Additionally, based on the distance distribution of the ToF sensor, we implemented logic to distinguish between high obstacles and low obstacles that can be traversed through articulated joint actuation, and to generate avoidance or climbing commands according to the determination results. Currently, we have confirmed that climbing commands are properly transmitted for low obstacles, and actual climbing operation is undergoing additional refinement due to insufficient torque in the driving unit.

In particular, we conducted the project in an End-to-End manufacturing approach where the team directly performed the entire process from idea planning through 3D modeling and printing, hardware assembly, sensor and actuator integration, control code development, and driving testing. We iteratively corrected mechanical, electrical, and software issues occurring during manufacturing to enhance the completeness of the overall system.

■ Future Improvement Plans

Going forward, we plan to improve the torque and mechanical structure of the vertical articulated driving unit so that when the ToF sensor determines a low obstacle, the robot can stably perform actual climbing operation. Additionally, we plan to expand functionality by recording and visualizing obstacle information acquired by LiDAR, and adding an acoustic sensor to collect and transmit signals such as human voice and tapping sounds from within the disaster space.

This robot is a disaster reconnaissance robot designed to explore the interior of narrow and dark debris crevices at collapsed disaster sites where direct human access is difficult. At collapse sites, entrances may be narrow or internal pathways may be curved, and with uneven floors and scattered debris, it is challenging for conventional mobile robots to enter stably. Additionally, the interior is dark and visibility is limited, making it difficult for rescue teams to immediately confirm the internal situation from outside. To address this, a low-profile crawler-based robot first enters narrow openings that are difficult for people to access. When lightweight debris obstacles block the path inside, a front pusher is utilized to remove obstacles and attempt further entry. Subsequently, when internal space exists but the entrance is narrower than the robot body itself, making direct entry difficult, a foldable rod-type camera probe mounted on the robot is deployed to confirm the internal situation beyond the narrow entrance. At this time, internal video is captured by the camera at the probe tip, and candidate thermal information from survivors is simultaneously confirmed through a thermal imaging sensor positioned at the midpoint of the probe. The robot transmits internal conditions and candidate heat source information from survivors to an external monitor using general camera video, LED lighting, and thermal imaging sensors. This service aims to help rescue teams pre-confirm the internal state before directly entering hazardous spaces by switching between the robot's direct entry, obstacle removal, and extended probe exploration based on the situation. [Expected Effects] This robot can be utilized to pre-confirm the internal situation of narrow and dark spaces at collapsed disaster sites where rescue teams find it difficult to directly enter. Sections accessible by direct robot entry are explored with the crawler, sections with obstacles are handled by attempting removal with the pusher, and sections with narrow entrances where the main body cannot fit are confirmed using the extended camera probe, enabling response to various debris environments. In particular, by utilizing a thermal imaging sensor in dark interior spaces that are difficult to confirm with a general camera alone, heat source candidates with potential survivor presence can be transmitted to external rescue teams. Rather than the robot directly determining survivors, it provides additional information that enables rescue teams to make judgments, which is meaningful as a disaster site reconnaissance support system. Furthermore, even within a confined 4m × 3m space, key constraints of disaster sites—narrow access routes, curved passages, debris obstacles, ultra-narrow entrances, and low-visibility environments—can be implemented step-by-step. Through this, the robot's entry feasibility, obstacle removal success rate, probe deployment distance, heat source candidate detection presence, and backward retreat feasibility can be quantitatively validated. Consequently, this service can contribute to assisting rescue teams' initial decision-making and enhancing the possibility of pre-exploration of hazardous spaces.
