To be used as a key electric vehicle hub for global customers with a target for mass production in 2026
Investment of approximately KRW 170 billion by 2030… Mass production of 360,000 battery systems per year Hyundai Mobis is building a dedicated factory in Spain, the center of the European automobile market.
Hyundai Mobis announced on the afternoon of the 23rd (local time) that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for a factory to supply electric vehicle battery systems to Volkswagen in the Spanish state of Navarre.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Spanish factory, which is scheduled to begin mass production in 2026, was attended by around 100 people, including Governor Maria Chivite, key local government officials, and executives from customer companies.
Hyundai Mobis currently operates battery system production plants in Korea, China, and the Czech Republic, and is also building core electrification component bases in the U.S. and Indonesia.
This Spanish plant is significant in that it marks a full-scale entry into Western Europe, the center of the European automobile market, and is a dedicated plant for supplying to Volkswagen.
The Spanish plant will carry out the important mission of ‘electrification’ and ‘expanding global orders,’ which are Hyundai Mobis’ core business directions.
Hyundai Mobis signed a large-scale BSA supply contract with Volkswagen last year. It was evaluated that the company expanded its scope based on its competitiveness in the electric vehicle business.
A battery system assembly (BSA) for an electric vehicle is a finished product that combines control devices and other electrical components into a battery pack to ensure that the battery can operate safely and efficiently in an electric vehicle.
High-capacity, high-efficiency battery systems are key components that determine the quality and performance of electric vehicles.
Jeong In-bo, head of the Spanish electric vehicle plant, said, “We will establish ourselves as a long-term partner to our customers through a stable supply of parts, and we will work to diversify our suppliers in the European region as well as for follow-up models.”
Hyundai Mobis will invest approximately KRW 170 billion in its Spanish plant by 2030.
The plan is to maximize efficiency by building cutting-edge electrification equipment technology and to use the Spanish plant as a standard electrification model specialized for global customers.
The Spanish factory has a total floor area of 50,000 m2 and will produce up to 360,000 battery systems per year.
The battery systems produced here will be installed in the next-generation electric vehicle platform mass-produced at the customer's factory located in Pamplona, approximately 14 km away.
Meanwhile, Navarra is located in the northernmost part of Spain and is a bridgehead for entering the European mainland, bordering France.
In Europe, it is known as the second largest automobile production base after Germany.
