Electric vehicle and charger experts from around the world gathered in Ansan City to develop electric vehicle charging standards.
The Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI, President Nam-Kyun Kim) held the 'EV Global Leaders Week' from April 15 to 19 at the Ansan Branch to bring together electric vehicle and charger experts from around the world to develop international standards.
EV Global Leaders Week consists of three major programs.
First, there is a meeting hosted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) (event name: ISO/TC22/SC31/JWG1 meeting) to develop international standards related to communication control between electric vehicles and chargers and verify them at the module (component) level.
This event is held sequentially in Europe/America/Asia, and KERI will be hosting it as the representative in Asia this year in recognition of its high research capabilities related to electric vehicle charging.
After the ISO meeting, which is the research and development stage, a testing (Test+Festival) is held, which is the stage where companies and companies practically verify the standard.
Domestic and foreignThis is an event hosted by the 'CharIN (Charin International),' which brings together major electric vehicle manufacturers and charger manufacturers to check for compatibility issues that arise during rapid charging.
CharIN, which has 307 world-renowned companies as members, is an international technology association with great influence in the electric vehicle market, and KERI is the first official testing institute designated by CharIN.
In this test, 11 electric vehicles or simulators produced by 10 companies (Hyundai Kia Motors, KG Mobility, Volkswagen, etc.) will be subjected to cross-validation testing by 11 charger manufacturers in turns.
The test results are provided to each manufacturer and used to resolve charging error issues.
Lastly, the Open Charger Alliance (OCA) will also hold an event (Event name: OCA 2024 OCPP 1.6 & 2.0.1 Plugfest) to check the smooth operation and management standards (OCPP) of electric vehicle chargers themselves.
OCPP, currently used by more than 50 countries around the world including Korea, is a type of communication standard used to provide information to charging users, authenticate users, and manage charging station status and faults.
OCA's goal for this event is to develop international standards that incorporate enhanced, secure charging technology.
Director Kim Nam-gyun said, “This is a rare case of global leaders gathering in one place to establish international standards for electric vehicle charging,” and added, “The reason KERI was able to host ‘EV Global Leaders Week’ this time was because of Ansan City’s solid policies and efforts to lead the way in popularizing eco-friendly electric vehicles, as well as our research institute’s technological prowess and infrastructure, which are recognized worldwide.”
President Kim continued, “Countless communication protocols are utilized between electric vehicles and chargers, and the complexity will increase as various new technologies are added in the future.” He added, “Countries and companies that secure international standards will take the lead in the electric vehicle market, and we will work to ensure that the KERI Ansan Branch can be at the center of this.”
Meanwhile, KERI is a government-funded research institute under the National Research Council of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Science and ICT.
