V2X modules for electric vehicles are also expected to obtain certification within the year
LG Electronics (CEO Cho Joo-wan) has secured global security reliability by receiving the world's first security certification for its V2X (Vehicle to Everything) module, a key technology for future mobility.
LG Electronics announced on the 26th that the V2X (Vehicle to Everything) module it supplies for Volkswagen's internal combustion engine vehicles has received the world's first international Common Criteria (CC) certification for security and stability.
CC certification is an international standard for evaluating the security of products, and is an evaluation certification mutually recognized by 31 countries, including Korea. LG Electronics obtained this certification to ensure that drivers can drive with peace of mind in line with the advanced European security certification system.
LG Electronics’ V2X module, which received CC certification this time, will be installed in the communication module (VW Transceiver Module) of Volkswagen’s internal combustion engine-only platform (MQB). LG Electronics also plans to receive CC certification for the V2X module installed in Volkswagen’s electric vehicle platform (MEB) within the year.
V2X refers to technology that allows cars to exchange information with various objects on the road. It consists of V2V (Vehicle to Vehicle), which provides information on surrounding traffic conditions and approaching vehicles, V2I (Vehicle to Infrastructure), which communicates with traffic infrastructure such as traffic lights, and V2P (Vehicle to Pedestrian), which checks pedestrian information.
Through this certification, LG Electronics was recognized for the excellence of its key V2X security performance, including ‘message protection’ that safely transmits and receives external messages from the vehicle, ‘privacy protection’ that protects against tracking of specific vehicles from the outside, and ‘access control’ that only allows access to users granted vehicle control authority.
As the importance of vehicle cybersecurity technology grows, LG Electronics has solidified its position in the global electric vehicle market as a major supplier of electric vehicle components that can be trusted by automakers through this CC certification acquisition. It is also expected to gain an advantage in the competition for future V2X module orders.
LG Electronics is strengthening security across all areas of its battlefield business, not just the security certification of its V2X modules.
LG Electronics VS Business Division received certification for its Vehicle Cyber Security Management System (CSMS) from TUV Rheinland, an internationally recognized testing and certification agency, in February of last year. Vehicle cybersecurity management systems have become an essential element for automakers as software-defined vehicles (SDVs) become the center of the future mobility industry.
In addition, LG Electronics is steadily securing competitiveness in the security field, which is becoming increasingly important in the automobile industry, such as by acquiring the management rights of Cybellum, an Israeli automotive cybersecurity company, in 2021.
LG Electronics VS Business Division Vice President Eun Seok-hyun said, “We have been recognized for our top-level security technology through international certification in the V2X field, a core technology for future mobility,” and added, “We will continue to lead the global automotive parts industry and provide differentiated value to complete vehicle customers.”
