Latest Snapdragon mobile processor compatibility verification completed
Full-scale supply of customer-oriented products, "We will strengthen cooperation with Qualcomm"
SK Hynix has begun commercializing 'LPDDR5T (Low Power Double Data Rate 5 Turbo)', which implements the fastest speed of current mobile DRAM at 9.6 Gbps (9.6 gigabits per second).
SK Hynix announced on the 25th that it has recently received the industry's first certification to apply LPDDR5T to Qualcomm Technologies' (Qualcomm) latest Snapdragon® 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform.
SK Hynix has been conducting compatibility verification work with its partner company Qualcomm since completing the development of LPDDR5T in January. Through this, the two companies have concluded that both products demonstrate excellent performance in smartphones that combine LPDDR5T and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 3rd generation mobile platform.
SK Hynix emphasized, “As we have completed performance verification from major mobile AP (Application Processor) companies, including Qualcomm, a leading global communications chip company, the scope of LPDDR5T’s application in mobile devices will rapidly expand in the future.”
A 16GB (gigabyte) capacity package product made by combining LPDDR5T individual chips is expected to be shipped soon, and the data processing speed of this package is 77GB per second. This is equivalent to processing 15 FHD (Full-HD) movies in one second. In addition, LPDDR5T has an advantage in terms of power consumption as it operates within the minimum voltage standard range of 1.01~1.12V (volts) set by the Joint Electron Device Engineering Committee (JEDEC).
During the development of this product, SK Hynix's technical team was able to improve performance in both speed and power efficiency by applying the 'HKMG (High-K Metal Gate)' process. Through this, the company expects that LPDDR5T will occupy a large share of the mobile DRAM market until the next generation, LPDDR6, is released.
“The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 product will enable generative AI-based large language models (LLM) and large vision models (LVM) to run at low power and with zero latency,” said Ziad Asghar, senior vice president of product management at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “The combination of Snapdragon mobile platforms and SK hynix’s fastest mobile DRAM will enable smartphone users to experience amazing AI capabilities.”
“We are pleased to confirm that LPDDR5T meets the needs of global customers for ultra-high-performance mobile DRAM,” said Ryu Sung-soo, Vice President (in charge of DRAM Product Planning) of SK hynix. “Smartphones are expected to grow into key devices implementing AI technology, and to this end, smartphone performance must continue to improve through mobile DRAM.” Ryu added, “We will continue to strengthen our cooperation with Qualcomm and strive to enhance our technological capabilities in this field.”
