Development of commercialization technology for high-temperature, high-voltage SiC operation, strengthening competitiveness of power semiconductors
SK Siltron, Above Semiconductor, and DB HiTek have joined hands for a 138.5 billion won research and development project for compound power semiconductors.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (Minister Ahn Deok-geun) held a 'Kick-off Meeting for Advancement of Compound Power Semiconductor Industry' at Yangjae E-Tower on the 20th with approximately 80 people including the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology Evaluation and Planning, Korea Semiconductor Research Association, and power semiconductor industry officials.
This year is the first year that a large-scale national project in the compound power semiconductor field is being promoted, and the compound power semiconductor industry by value chain, including materials, components, ICs (integrated circuits), and modules, gathered in one place to discuss ways to revitalize the ecosystem and the status of technology development.
At the event, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing ceremony was held between the anchor companies of Sangipyeong-Johap-Power Semiconductor to establish a domestic compound power semiconductor ecosystem.
According to the memorandum of understanding (MOU), Sangipyeong will closely support the entire research and development (R&D) cycle of the participating organizations, and the association will host a consultative body for each compound power semiconductor field.
SK Siltron (materials sector), which produces compound power semiconductor wafers, Above Semiconductor (IC sector), a leading fabless company in the power semiconductor sector, and DB HiTek (device/module sector), an 8-inch legacy process foundry company, are involved in the entire process from wafer production to design and manufacturing. We will actively cooperate to establish a virtuous cycle ecosystem in Korea.
Next, all implementing agencies of the compound power semiconductor advancement project announced their first-year project implementation plans, and discussions were held on ways to interconnect technologies being developed for each project.
An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said, “The goal of this national project is to go beyond simple technology development and create an ecosystem through organic technology linkage by value chain. We expect that this large-scale memorandum of understanding (R&D) will serve as a foundation for Korea to leap forward as a system semiconductor powerhouse.”
