Customized MEC service plans for individual businesses
Jointly conducting 5G MEC business starting in 2020 Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is a technology that provides ultra-low latency services by installing small data centers close to customers and reducing data transmission sections.

SK Telecom announced on the 4th that it will promote 5G-based MEC business in cooperation with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
First, SK Telecom plans to introduce infrastructure services that maximize user service performance through ‘AWS Wavelength.’
AWS Wavelength is a service that builds compute and storage infrastructure at the edge of a telecommunications company's 5G network, enabling developers to develop applications that require ultra-low latency of 1/1000 second.
The two companies plan to jointly enter the 5G MEC business starting in 2020. We plan to launch 5G MEC services targeting customers in industries such as distribution, gaming, media, and manufacturing.
We also plan to introduce customized MEC services for individual companies. The service for individual companies will involve building 5G MEC infrastructure within the target company, and will primarily target corporate customers introducing 5G-based B2B services such as smart factories and smart offices.
Having your own MEC infrastructure allows you to process large amounts of data internally, saving time and costs and preventing information leaks.
The two companies plan to build a B2B and B2C MEC ecosystem in the future.
SK Telecom MNO Business Division Head Yoo Young-sang said, “The combination of 5G MEC and cloud is expected to promote innovation, such as increasing productivity in various fields.”
Meanwhile, SK Telecom is building MEC centers in 12 key 5G hub areas across the country. In August, it introduced the '5GX MEC Platform' that applies MEC to base stations.
