| 2 pairs of LAN cables can support 2.5Gbps speed, 4 pairs can support 5Gbps speed
| Provides up to 5Gbps by complying with IEEE 802.3bz

KT announced on the 8th that it has commercialized the world's first solution that provides Internet speeds of up to 5 Gbps by directly utilizing LAN cables installed in apartments, buildings, etc.

KT employees are verifying the internet speed quality of 5-gigabit UTP commercial equipment through existing UTP cables.

Based on this technology, we will begin full-scale commercial service of LAN-based 10-gigabit Internet technology starting on the 5th, starting with Songpa Helio City (9,510 households), the largest apartment complex in Korea.

KT has the technology to provide 1Gbps speeds with 2 existing LAN cables. Most of the in-house wiring in apartments and small and medium-sized buildings built before 2000 is installed with 2 LAN cables. When applying LAN cable-based speed increase technology, 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps internet speeds are possible with 2 pairs and 4 pairs of LAN cables, respectively, in the existing LAN environment in apartments.

KT provides a maximum speed of 5 Gbps by developing technology in compliance with international standards (IEEE 802.3bz), and can automatically select and provide speeds of 5 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, and 1 Gbps depending on the environment. KT successfully developed this technology and related solutions in cooperation with domestic small and medium-sized enterprises through the '10Giga Internet Commercialization Promotion Project' of the Ministry of Science and ICT/Korea Information Society Agency in 2018, and secured all foundations for commercialization as this technology was included in the national 'Terminal Equipment Technology Standards' hosted by the National Radio Research Agency and revised and announced in early 2019.

Since 2016, KT has been building 10-gigabit internet and applying pilot services in Seoul, the Gyeonggi metropolitan area, and some areas of Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, and since November 2018, it has been stably providing commercial services in major cities across the country, including Seoul and six metropolitan cities, the first of its kind in Korea.

With the commercialization of this 10-gigabit Internet technology based on LAN cables, KT will be able to stably provide customers with high-quality services that require large bandwidths, such as UHD video services, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) services, and next-generation Wi-Fi 802.11ax, as well as 10-gigabit Internet based on the country's best optical Internet network.

KT Infrastructure Research Institute Director Lee Seon-woo said, “Through the development of LAN-based 10-gigabit Internet technology, we can now provide world-class, high-quality 10-gigabit Internet service to customers living in apartments or buildings where optical lines are not installed.” He added, “We will continue to take the lead in developing new technologies so that 10-gigabit Internet can be used anywhere in the country.”
