The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 9th that it will launch a high-performance computing support project to strengthen the competitiveness of the AI industry.

In September 2018, McKinsey predicted that AI, which has emerged as a general purpose technology (GPT), will contribute $13 trillion to global GDP by 2030.

AI development is completed as a final service through the process of acquiring and processing data and creating an AI model (algorithm) through a large amount of repetitive learning.

This process requires a large-scale computational process, and computational resources must be secured to process large amounts of data at high speed.

However, building high-performance computing requires enormous costs, making it a huge burden for universities, startups, and research institutes to utilize computational resources.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Science and ICT will implement a high-performance computing support project for AI analysis and development in 2020 by expanding the support capacity by about six times compared to 2019, the first year of support.

Starting this year, the one-time selection support method from last year will be improved to a year-round support method. The support capacity will also be flexibly supported at 240PF, which is about 6 times larger than the previous year.

The business is promoted by applying for only the required amount of operational capacity in a single capacity support method, checking the usage on a monthly basis, and adjusting the operational capacity used according to the utilization rate.

Through this, it will be operated as a year-round, continuous support system that can provide continuous support to companies and institutions in need of high-performance computing resources.

The supplier of the 2020 high-performance computing support business was NAVER Business Platform (NBP) selected through a public offering in February.

This project is expected to contribute to the revitalization of the domestic cloud computing industry by providing high-performance computing resources, development environments, backup services, and security control in the form of a cloud.

Applications for high-performance computing support were received from 870 small and medium-sized enterprises, venture companies, research institutes, public institutions, universities, etc. (November 2019 - February 2020), and support will begin on March 9.

Starting April 10, applications will be accepted year-round through the Open Innovation Hub Portal .
