▲AI International Standard Open Workshop Detailed Schedule / (Data: Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy)
Introduction of each working group chair's standard and explanation of key issues
Leaders in international artificial intelligence (AI) standards and experts from domestic AI companies, academia, and research institutes communicated together through standards.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's National Institute of Standards and Technology, together with the AI International Standardization Committee (ISO/IEC JTC1 SC42, hereinafter referred to as SC42), jointly established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), co-hosted the 'AI International Standard Open Workshop' at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry conference room on the 24th.
This workshop, attended by approximately 140 AI experts from the AI international standards working group (WG), including Google and Nvidia, and domestic academia, industry, and research, including KT and Naver, is a special public event that is part of the SC 42 general meeting held for the first time in Korea.
It is said to be very meaningful for related companies and experts who have difficulty accessing international AI standards to hear directly from the executives of each standards WG about the key issues of the latest international standards currently under development.
At the workshop, the major international AI standards of each WG under SC 42 and the AI promotion of domestic companies were presented.
In particular, Google's Lenora Zimmerman, project lead for the Trustworthiness WG, raised social and ethical considerations about how AI could harm individuals and society. And it introduced a standard for a solution to this problem.
At the AI Safety WG, NVIDIA Chairman Riccardo Mariani explained the requirements standards for design, development, and verification to ensure the safety of AI systems. In addition, the interest and enthusiasm of attendees continued with the introduction of AI machine learning performance evaluation, AI-based healthcare information standards, and announcements of AI promotion trends by KT, Naver, and Korea Testing Laboratory in Korea.
With the recent rapid development of AI technology, the international standards developed by SC 42 are expected to be reflected in the implementation of European AI laws, the US AI executive order, etc., and the importance of AI standards is increasing as they can be directly related to the survival of companies.
Jin Jong-wook, the head of the Korea Agency for Technology and Standards, said, “We have confirmed the high interest of companies in AI standards, and we will continue to provide a venue for such standard discussions in the future.” Lee Gyeong-woo, AI Digital Secretary who was invited to the workshop, emphasized, “AI can be said to be a game changer that drives innovation across all industries,” and “The government will support our country’s leap forward as an AI technology powerhouse and intensively foster the related AI semiconductor industry.”
