More compact size without performance degradation, 45% reduction in peak power consumption
Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in low power wireless IoT solutions, introduces a new cellular IoT solution that combines the lowest power and smallest footprint of Nordic’s nRF91 product line with a scalable design to simplify development and deployment across the massive IoT market.
Nordic announced on the 6th that it is supplying the smallest and lowest power nRF9151 System-in-Package (SiP) and nRF9151 Development Kit (DK).
The nRF9151 is a fully integrated, pre-certified SiP that supports a wide range of application development and can also be used as a standalone cellular modem.
This SiP can simplify the development and deployment of scalable products across massive IoT markets such as industrial automation, asset tracking, smart cities, smart metering, and smart agriculture.
The nRF9151 represents a significant advancement in cellular IoT technology, providing a cost-effective yet globally accessible solution.
The nRF9151 includes hardware with a programmable application processor, as well as software and cloud services., a comprehensive yet compact solution that includes development tools and world-class support.
Like its predecessor, the nRF9161, the nRF9151 supports 3GPP Release 14 LTE-M/NB-IoT global coverage and DECT NR+.
On the other hand, the nRF9151 not only has a significantly reduced footprint for more compact products without compromising performance, but also offers unique features that set it apart from the existing nRF9160 and nRF9161 products.
In addition to supporting Power Class 3 at 23 dBm, the nRF9151 also supports Power Class 5 at 20 dBm, while the unique low power design of the nRF9151 reduces peak power consumption by up to 45%, helping to reduce the cost of battery-operated products.
Additionally, the nRF9151 will add Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) support via a future firmware release.
The nRF9151 development kit is ideal for developing cellular IoT applications, featuring SIM cards from Onomondo and Wireless Logic that support free data.
The development kit comes pre-loaded with Nordic’s Serial LTE Modem application for interfacing via AT commands.
This allows the nRF9151 to also be used as a standalone cellular modem, simplifying integration with existing customer solutions.
Developers can get started using firmware samples in the Quick Start tool provided with Nordic’s cross-platform development software, nRF Connect for Desktop.
nRF9151 The SiP features a dedicated 64MHz Arm Cortex-M33 application processor with 1MB of flash and 256KB of RAM, along with Nordic’s in-house designed RF front-end and power management, and a GNSS-enabled multimode LTE-M/NB-IoT modem.
Application design is supported by Nordic’s nRF Connect SDK and nRF Cloud Service, while regulatory certification and operator pre-approval of the module can also be obtained through Nordic.
Nordic provides stable support for its modules/SiPs and design environments for long-life IoT applications. The nRF9151’s improved supply chain resilience compared to the previous generation nRF91 Series enables the development of robust, sustainable applications with a production life of 10 years or more.
“We are delighted to see the nRF9151 moving into production as our customers, and many other IoT developers, require a highly integrated, low-power, and compact LTE-M/NB-IoT and DECT NR+ solution,” says Øyvind Birkenes, Senior Vice President of the Long Range Wireless Business Unit at Nordic Semiconductor. “It is the only solution on the market that can meet these needs with its flexible supply chain and robust feature set.”
