Minimizing the number of external components, accelerating the development of compact fans and pumps
STMicroelectronics is expected to accelerate the development of compact farms and pumps with the introduction of an integrated high-voltage power stage and space-efficient evaluation board that support smaller, more robust motor drives.
STMicroelectronics, a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, introduces the PWD5T60 three-phase driver along with a ready-to-use evaluation board that supports flexible control strategies, accelerating the development of reliable yet compact fans and pumps based on energy-efficient motors.
Suitable for applications up to 500 V, the PWD5T60 integrates six power MOSFETs and gate drivers with RDS(ON) of only 1.38Ω, enabling excellent energy density per area.
A zero-drop bootstrap diode is also built-in, minimizing the number of external components required, allowing the circuit to be completed in just 30% of the board area of a comparable driver implemented with discrete components.
Additionally, the operating frequency can be set to achieve optimal response performance and energy efficiency by closely matching the propagation delays of the high-side and low-side MOSFETs, minimizing cycle distortion and maximizing flexibility.
The accompanying EVLPWD-FAN-PUMP evaluation board demonstrates the benefits this driver offers for projects up to 100W. Helps developers navigate quickly.
This board combines the PWD5T60 and the STM32G0 microcontroller (MCU) and can handle field-oriented control (FOC) or 6-step control of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) and brushless DC (BLDC) motors.
This board leverages the highly integrated features of the PWD5T60 with configurable single or triple shunt sensing capabilities in a small, circular form factor and is optimized for fan and pump applications.
It also features a power supply stage to generate the 12 V and 3.3 V supply voltages required for this application, and a full AC line filter is also provided at the input stage.
The EVLPWD-FAN-PUMP board, with onboard bus voltage sensing, supports leveraging the PWD5T60's safety design, which provides an undervoltage lockout (UVLO) feature for each bootstrap section to prevent operation under hazardous or low-efficiency conditions.
Designed for ruggedness, the PWD5T60 also features cross-conduction prevention along with interlocking and pre-programmed default deadtime to ensure failsafe protection against shoot-through currents.
In addition, the below-ground design provides excellent robustness, ensuring perfect performance.
The PWD5T60 also features a smart shutdown function that uses a comparator to quickly prevent overcurrent.
When a fault is detected, the output is immediately turned off and the output is disabled for a programmable duration by connecting a capacitor and optional pull-up resistor to a dedicated pin.>
Since the turn-off response is not affected by these components, product developers can optimize the duration until the fault is resolved while always ensuring immediate turn-off.
This driver offers optimum flexibility with a wide input supply voltage range from 9 V to 20 V, while its CMOS/TTL compatible logic inputs down to 3.3 V allow easy interfacing with host controllers.
The PWD5T60 is available in a tiny 12mm x 12mm VFQFPN package measuring just 0.95mm in height and is currently in production, priced at $3.28 in quantities of 1,000.
The EVLPWD-FAN-PUMP evaluation board is available now from eSTore for a low price of $102. The board offers plug-and-play convenience and can utilize the FOC and 6-step control firmware from the X-CUBE-MCSDK motor control software development kit, available free of charge from st.com.
