전기전자분야 국제표준화기구인 국제전기기술위원회(IEC)의 미래 표준화 방향을 결정하는 백서(White Paper) 주제로 우리나라가 제안한 ‘중전압직류 배전망 기술’이 채택됐다.
Korea's proposal 'Medium Voltage DC Distribution Network Technology' adopted as topic of IEC White Paper
In the 'medium voltage direct current distribution network' market, which is expected to reach approximately 15 trillion won in 2029, our country's technology has taken the lead after fierce competition with China.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's National Institute of Standards and Technology (President Jin Jong-wook) announced on the 19th that Korea's proposed 'medium-voltage direct current distribution network technology' was adopted as the topic of a white paper that determines the future standardization direction of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the international standardization organization in the electrical and electronics field.
Medium-voltage DC distribution network technology is a DC distribution network of 1.5 kV to 100 kV that connects high-voltage DC lines of 100 kV or higher and low-voltage DC branch lines of less than 1.5 kV. According to TechSci Research, the global market is expected to reach approximately KRW 15 trillion in 2029 due to increased demand resulting from energy transition.
Medium voltage direct current distribution networks facilitate the connection of renewable energy and increase transmission efficiency.
In addition, compared to AC distribution facilities with the same transmission capacity, the size and electromagnetic wave generation are reduced, and it is easy to respond to increased use of DC loads such as installation of rapid chargers for electric vehicles and expansion of Internet data centers.
In addition, power and voltage control are free, which increases network utilization and improves power quality.
IEC predicts cutting-edge technology trends in the electrical and electronic fields through standard white papers, analyzes market demand, and determines the standardization direction of promising future technologies. With the adoption of this topic, our country will take the lead in publishing the IEC white paper for 2025.
Accordingly, our country has secured an advantageous position for promoting international standardization of 'medium-voltage direct current distribution network technology', a next-generation core technology, and further contributes to preempting the global market, which is expected to reach approximately KRW 15 trillion in 2029.
The IEC holds a public contest every year to select one subject for the next standardization through voting. This year, after fierce competition, the subject proposed by Korea was selected along with two subjects proposed by China.
This is the result of collaboration between the Korea Agency for Technology and Standards, Korea Electric Power Corporation, Samsung Display, and the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute as a single team, and this is the second time that the topic has been adopted as an IEC white paper.
Our country proposed 'quantum technology' as the topic of the 2020 white paper, which was adopted, and subsequently published a white paper under our leadership (2021) and established the International Organization for Standardization's Joint Technical Committee (IEC/ISOJTC3 (quantum technology)) (December 2023), and produced a Korean chairman (Professor Haeseong Lee of Jeonju University) (February 2024).
Jin Jong-wook, the president of KATS, said, “The adoption of this IEC white paper topic is an achievement that demonstrates our country’s status through public-private collaboration in the midst of fierce international standardization competition,” and added, “We plan to actively support the reflection of our technology in the IEC standard white paper by forming a special working group with domestic experts from related companies, academia, and research institutes in the future.”
