One year of algorithm-based coding education
Practical project-oriented training Samsung Electronics announced on the 10th that it will begin software education by opening the 'Samsung Youth Software Academy' in four locations across the country, including Seoul, Daejeon, Gwangju, and Gumi.
Samsung Electronics began accepting applications on October 22nd and selected 500 trainees for the first batch through software aptitude tests and interviews. The selected trainees had an entrance ceremony on this day and began their one-year training.
The Samsung Youth Software Academy, established to expand the IT ecosystem and enhance youth employment competitiveness by strengthening software competitiveness, is one of the follow-up measures to the "Economic Revitalization and Job Creation Plan" announced on August 8.
Samsung Electronics plans to train 10,000 young software professionals over the next five years. The Samsung Youth Software Academy is sponsored by the Ministry of Employment and Labor and operates through Multicampus, an educational company specializing in software education.
The training program is divided into 1 and 2 semesters and runs for a total of 12 months with the goal of training software developers who can be immediately deployed in the field. It allows students to learn independently, tailored to the characteristics of the software industry, which is characterized by rapid technological change.
The first semester consisted of an immersive coding education course to build the foundation of software, including algorithms and programming languages. By introducing 'gamification', a game-based educational technique that incorporates elements such as fun and rewards, we were able to help students become interested in software and immerse themselves in learning.
The second semester will be a 100% project-based, self-directed learning course designed to cultivate practical software developers with diverse development experience, without any theoretical lectures.
Learning utilizes development tools such as 'GitHub' used by developers in the field, and methods such as 'Code Review' and 'Pair Programming'.
Additionally, after the end of each semester, a 'Job Fair' is held for one month, providing various services such as career coaching, job training, and recruitment information tailored to each individual's level and aptitude.
Jeong Su-won, a first-year student admitted to the Seoul Campus, said, “As a non-major, I felt limited while studying Python and C++ on my own, but I will work hard as I have received a lot of support and education from the academy.”
Shin A-young, a new student at the Gwangju campus, said, “While preparing for employment, I had some regrets about my IT skills, but through this training, I would like to design a professional career as a software developer.”
At the entrance ceremony, Multicampus CEO Yoo Yeon-ho said, “We will create the best programs, environment, and faculty to help our students become software developers who will lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”
Samsung Electronics provides this software training free of charge.Additionally, a monthly educational stipend of 1 million won will be provided during the training period. Top students will also be given opportunities to intern at Samsung Electronics' overseas research centers.
Samsung Youth Software Academy plans to select trainees twice a year. The second batch of 500 trainees will begin recruiting through the website in May 2019 and will be selected in June.
