| Microchip Launches Pre-Provisioning Solution for Supporting Devices of Various Sizes… Simplifying Hardware-Based IoT Security

Hardware-based security is the only way to protect private keys from physical attacks and remote data extraction, but it requires extensive security expertise, development time, and costs to set up and provision each device.

Microchip Technology Inc. today announced a pre-provisioned Trust Platform solution that provides secure key storage for small, medium and large-scale device deployments using the ATECC608A Secure Element (SE).

The number of connected devices produced globally by individual companies ranges from hundreds to millions of units per year, depending on size. In such a situation, the scalability of the architecture becomes a major obstacle to construction.

Manufacturer-provided setup and provisioning support is limited to high-volume orders, forcing small to medium-sized deployments to settle for lower-performance options.

Microchip’s Trust Platform for its CryptoAuthentication family of products enables enterprises of all sizes to easily implement secure authentication.

Microchip’s Trust Platform, which consists of three tiers, offers pre-provisioned and pre-configured secure elements that are ready to use out of the box, or fully customizable secure elements, allowing developers to choose the platform that best suits their design.

Trust Platform Tier 1 is Trust&GO, a solution that provides out-of-the-box authentication, with pre-provisioned zero-touch security elements and a minimum order quantity (MOQ) of 10 units.

Device Credentials are shipped pre-programmed and locked into the ATECC608A chip for automated cloud or LoRaWAN authentication onboarding. The certificates and public keys are delivered in a manifest file that is available for download through Microchip’s dedicated e-commerce store and authorized resellers.

Microchip’s Trust Platform can provide authentication to any type of public or private cloud infrastructure, while also providing flexibility and customization. For customers looking to further customize, the TrustFLEX and TrustCUSTOM platforms are included in the program.

Tier 2 of the program, TrustFLEX, provides customers with the flexibility to use the certificate issuer of their choice while benefiting from pre-defined use cases.

These use cases include basic security measures such as Transport Layer Security (TLS)-enhanced authentication for connecting to any IP-based network using certificate chaining, LoRaWAN authentication, secure boot, over-the-air (OTA) updates, IP protection, user data protection, and key rotation. This will reduce the time and complexity required to customize devices without the need for customized part numbers.

For customers who want to customize the entire design, the program's tier 3, TrustCUSTOM, provides customer-specific configuration capabilities and tailored credential provisioning.

“As successful attacks on software-based security solutions increase, there is a growing need to adopt practices such as separating private keys from the secure element domain,” said Nuri Dagdeviren, vice president of Microchip’s Secure Products Group.

“Microchip’s Trust Platform simplifies and cost-effectively deploys hardware-based security for companies of all sizes, removing the barriers typically associated with device setup and provisioning,” he explained.

Microchip has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide an intuitive, streamlined onboarding process to AWS IoT services for all products designed within the Microchip Trust Platform.

Common Criteria (CC) certified JIL (Joint Interpretation Library) High grade AThe TECC608A provides secure key storage, implementing proven security practices and high-level secure key storage into the device.

The device protects the system against a wide range of known physical attacks through hardware-based root of trust storage and encryption measures.

The ATECC608A is an agnostic solution that can be used with any MCU or MPU. Designers can use the Trust Platform design tool set, including ▲ Guided Use Case Tools ▲ Python Tutorials ▲ C Code Examples for Use Cases ▲ Secret Exchange Utility ▲ Trust Platform Hardware Development Kit.

Trust Platform devices are available for purchase through Microchip’s purchasing portal or through a Microchip authorized distributor.
