Enhancing open data and interoperability in AI data cloud
Building a data foundation with governance to accelerate AI and apps
Snowflake, a global AI data cloud company, has strengthened the performance and efficiency of its cloud to make it easier for companies to utilize AI data.
Snowflake announced enhanced capabilities for its single, unified platform at Snowflake Summit 2024, taking place in San Francisco from June 3 to 6.
New features enhance AI Data Cloud capabilities to provide enterprises with greater flexibility and interoperability regardless of data location.
It not only makes it easier for businesses to find and collaborate on the data, models, and applications they need, but also enhances performance and efficiency to make it easier to utilize AI.
Apache Iceberg, an open source table format, enables organizations to extract value from and access their data.
Snowflake enables customers to more easily consume, govern, and collaborate on externally stored Iceberg data on the platform via Iceberg Tables. This improves overall storage interoperability.
Snowflake Horizon builds a data foundation with governance for AI and app acceleration.
One of Horizon’s new features, the Internal Marketplace (private preview), enables users to curate and publish data, models, and applications for discovery and use by specific teams within their organizations.
At the same time, we’ve strengthened security to prevent accidental sharing with external parties. Teams can also restrict content visibility within their organization. Snowflake continues to expand its collaboration capabilities, including AI Models (coming in private preview), Iceberg Tables, and Dynamic Tables.
Snowflake has also enhanced its AI capabilities to help all users easily discover a variety of use cases.
Universal Search allows customers to search across the AI Data Cloud, including Snowflake storage, external Iceberg storage, and third-party vendor data.
Built on cutting-edge search engine technology from Neeva, which Snowflake acquired in May of last year, the feature allows users to find data using natural language and take action quickly.
Additionally, for data discovery and curation, Snowflake has added a new AI Powered Object Description (coming in private preview). This feature automatically generates relevant context and comments for tables and views.
Snowflake is constantly working to improve platform performance and efficiency to meet the needs of its customers.
According to the Snowflake Performance Index (SPI), which measures Snowflake performance, as of April 30, 2022, query execution times on unified workloads in customer environments have improved by 27% compared to August 2022, and have improved by 12% compared to a year ago as of April.
Data loading is also faster, saving costs. As of April 30, 2022, customers have seen up to a 25% performance increase for JSON format file loading and up to a 50% performance increase for Parquet file loading without any direct action.
Snowflake currently supports more than 40 cloud regions and is increasing the influence of AI data cloud globally.
This includes regions and countries with strict data management regulations. It also includes an EU-specific data boundary that is strongly enforced for European customers’ data services, and it will also provide a separate environment tailored to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).
This environment meets Impact Level 4 (IL4) security control requirements, including networking integration with the Boundary Cloud Access Point (BCAP).
