Cloudflare Reports Internet Outages Summary Cable Damage, Natural Disasters
There were several instances of governments shutting down the internet to prevent exam cheating in the third quarter of 2024, but only one instance occurred in the fourth quarter.
Cloudflare recently released its Internet disruption summary report for Q4 2024.
According to the report, government-imposed disruptions occurred in Mozambique, where mobile internet connections were cut on October 25 and November 3 due to protests against the re-election of the ruling Frelimo party. The government restricted internet access as protests turned violent.
Military disruptions have occurred in key conflict zones. In Syria, Israeli airstrikes on November 9 caused Internet traffic to drop by about 80% in the Aleppo and Idlib areas.
Ukraine has suffered internet outages in several areas due to rolling blackouts caused by Russian missile attacks.
In two countries across Africa, internet service was disrupted due to damaged terrestrial cables, and as has been confirmed many times before, rolling power outages due to unexpected power outages and military action have also disrupted the internet.
On October 1, 2024, MTN Rwanda in Rwanda warned that internet connectivity may be degraded due to damage to a dual fiber line in Tanzania and Uganda. This caused a sharp drop in internet traffic and a complete outage for about six hours, but it has since been restored. In Niger, internet service was disrupted nationwide from November 29 to November 30 due to damage to a double fiber optic cable.
The outage was caused by a power outage in Cuba. On October 18, November 6, and December 4, Cuba experienced nationwide blackouts, which severely disrupted Internet service. The Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mining cited a sudden shutdown of the power system and a power outage due to strong winds as the reasons.
Guadeloupe suffered a power outage on October 25 when striking workers occupied a power plant, while Kenya experienced a widespread power outage on December 18, reducing internet traffic by more than 70%.
Internet outages also occurred in countries hit by natural disasters such as storms and earthquakes. Two European Internet service providers experienced service outages due to unexpected problems during maintenance work.
Florida, USA, experienced an internet outage on October 9 due to Hurricane Milton, and restoration efforts were underway for several days.
Mayotte saw a sharp drop in internet traffic on December 14 after Cyclone Chitdo damaged power, water and communications infrastructure.
Vanuatu suffered a nearly 90% drop in internet traffic after the December 17 earthquake, slowing recovery efforts.
Verizon users in several states across the United States also experienced brief Internet outages of unknown cause.
