Announcement of the results of the 2024 National Vote for the Top 10 Research Achievements of the Year
The world's highest level of ultra-sensitive blood cancer mutation gene detection technology has been selected as the best technology by the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) by the public.
The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS, President Choi Cheol-jin) selected the '2024 KIMS Materials News TOP 10' through a national vote.
This year's selection of excellent research achievements was conducted in the form of a national vote, in which the public directly selected the excellent research achievements of the Materials Research Institute that they felt, in order to highlight representative research achievements of the institution and increase public consensus on materials technology. This is the third time it has been implemented, starting in 2022.
According to the results of a national vote conducted by the Korea Materials Research Institute on research results officially reported in the media this year, △The world's highest level of ultra-sensitive blood cancer mutation gene detection technology won first place with 1,131 votes out of a total of 8,682 votes.
This technology is based on a biosensor nanomaterial for optical signal amplification and can detect cancer mutation genes in blood with an ultra-high sensitivity of up to 0.000000001%, the highest level in the world.
2nd place was also a technology related to cancer, with 1,056 votes going to △Body fluid-based non-invasive cancer early diagnosis material technology.
The study is a non-invasive technique for diagnosing cancer by rapidly and highly sensitively detecting metabolites and changes in cancer patients from body fluids.
It can be said that an innovative sensor material has been developed that amplifies the optical signal of cancer metabolites and analyzes it using artificial intelligence to diagnose cancer.
The research result that ranked third is the world's first technology for △simultaneous absorption of multi-band electromagnetic waves, which received 721 votes.
The research team developed the world's first ultra-thin film-type composite material technology that can simultaneously absorb over 99% of various frequency bands of communication electromagnetic waves (5G/6G, WiFi, autonomous driving radar, etc.) with a single material. In addition, the Materials Research Institute selected a total of 10 technologies through a national referendum.
Choi Chul-jin, the president of the Korea Materials Research Institute, said, “I am very grateful to the public for showing interest in the research results of the institute and voting for them with their own hands,” and added, “The Korea Materials Research Institute promises to continue to reward the public with high-quality research results so that they can have pride in and empathize with the country’s science and technology.”
Meanwhile, in order to continue to promote excellent research results that the public can feel, the Korea Materials Research Institute has been conducting a national vote for the 'KIMS Materials News TOP 10 of the Year', which highlights the research results of the institute's representative research, in conjunction with a SNS event since 2022.
