Model-Based Design Seminar for Motor Control Algorithm Development
Possibly, ARM's Cortex series began to receive attention starting from Apple's iPhone launch in 2007. The Cortex Series includes not only the Cortex-A used in Smart-Phones, but also Cortex-R and Cortex-M, among which Cortex-M is further divided into M0, M0+, M3, and M4. These Cortex-M cores are designed to operate at a maximum core clock of 300[MHz] or below, unlike Cortex-A. Additionally, only Cortex-M4 can be used in conjunction with an FPU that performs floating-point calculations. Currently, these Cortex-M4 cores are primarily used for AC motor control. In this seminar, we will introduce the ADSP-CM408 from Analog Devices, which is based on Cortex-M4 and features the fastest 240[MHz] core clock in its class. First, let us briefly summarize the key specifications of Cortex-M4 based MCUs released by Analog Devices. They are broadly classified into ADSP-CM402, 403, 407, and 408. All of them include an FPU to facilitate floating-point calculations, have up to 2[MB] Flash with 384[kB] of SRAM, and incorporate two 16-bit ADCs. For more detailed information, please refer to the lecture. Notably, this seminar employs a methodology where an algorithm for AC motor control is developed on a model-based approach using Mathworks' Simulink, and after verification of the algorithm through simulation is completed, the relevant C-code is automatically generated. Once the desired application-related code development is completed, peripherals for use in the MCU are selected. For example, device driver codes for driving peripherals such as ADC, PWM, and UART are downloaded from the Analog Devices website and installed on the PC. Now, the algorithm-related C-code generated from Simulink is appropriately combined with necessary device drivers such as ADC, PWM, and UART so that it can be executed on the ADSP-CM408 evaluation board, and compilation and linking are performed. Finally, we will explain the method of downloading the executable image obtained through IAR to the synchronous motor evaluation board developed by Analog Devices and controlling it using Matlab GUI. This seminar introduced a method of vector-controlling a 500[W] PMSM by developing applications based on Simulink to more easily use the ADSP-CM40x released by Analog Devices, creating the final image with IAR tool.
