Understanding High-Speed Signal Transmission Characteristics of PCB and Measurement Demo on Actual Boards
Probe-Station is… - A core inspection equipment for electrical characteristic testing in the semiconductor, wafer, PCB, and board development analysis division. It is equipment that can verify the electrical characteristics of a chip by making contact with a fine needle called a Probe Tip to the small PAD within the semiconductor chip. Probe-Station Application - Used in conjunction with measuring instruments such as Network Analyzer, Oscilloscope, Impedance Analyzer, LCR Meter, and DC Parameter Analyzer. Rather than conventional modularized measurement methods or hand-held probing methods, it is used for measurements requiring precise movement on very small PADs. - Recently, it is also used for PCB measurement of mobile phones and smart TVs, sensors applied to automobiles, and RF and DC characteristic measurement in IT convergence fields (telecommunications, chemicals, materials, bio, etc.). Signal paths called interconnectors or channels, such as PCBs, have various electrical and physical characteristics with respect to high-speed signals. To understand how these characteristics affect high-speed signals and cause transmission errors, and to measure more accurately and correctly, probes and probe-stations are used to analyze the results. High-speed signals are transmitted from a transmitter to a receiver along a path called an interconnector or channel, which is composed of PCBs, connectors, and cables. Since interconnectors have their own electrical and physical characteristics, signals may be transmitted well or signals may become distorted and noise may increase, causing transmission errors, depending on these characteristics. These characteristics include characteristic impedance, insertion/return loss or S-parameter, skew or delay, crosstalk, and mode conversion. Additionally, to accurately measure these characteristics on an actual PCB, a probing operation is required to precisely contact high-performance RF Probe Tips to signal or ground pads. Often, this probing operation requires considerable time and effort. With a precision probe-station, this task can be performed easily and accurately. This seminar aims to measure the high-speed signal characteristics of PCBs through probing demonstrations using a probe-station and a TDR/S-Parameter Probe optimized for PCB measurement.
