Types and Roles of Digital Isolators for AC Motor Control
This seminar provided a practical explanation of the various isolator product lines released by Analog Devices from the perspective of AC motor control. Above all, we explained in detail what it means to perform isolation from a theoretical standpoint, and then presented step-by-step how it is applied to AC motor control, including various topologies with diagrams. First, we identified the sections requiring isolation in a typical AC motor circuit configuration, and specifically explained the methods by applying isolated gate drivers such as ADuM4223 used to provide isolation between the controller board and the inverter board containing IGBTs/MOSFETs, isolated Sigma-Delta modulators such as AD740x used for current measurement through shunt resistors, as well as USB isolators for PC communication, UART, CAN, and other communication isolators in an easy-to-understand manner. Additionally, we explained the methods for implementing isolation in two scenarios: when measuring current using a SAR ADC typically included in AC motor control MCUs, and when an external Sigma-Delta ADC is added for more precise current measurement, accompanied by various diagrams. Generally, isolation can be broadly divided into optocouplers and non-opto isolators product families, and these must comply with the IEC 61800-5-1 isolation standard. Specifically, we examined what standards are related to isolation in greater detail, and explained from various perspectives including device package how the isolator product families released by Analog Devices comply with these standards. Through this seminar, you will gain a more accurate understanding of isolation and learn how to implement current, voltage, and various information transmission between the control board through isolation when designing AC motors. Most importantly, you will be able to learn about the various standards that must be considered when developing products that control high power.
