Rohm, a semiconductor manufacturer, develops and provides a wide range of products including discretes, LSIs, and modules. In particular, we provide useful information related to regulators (LDO, DC/DC, etc.) to support power supply design.
In this webinar, under the theme of "DC/DC Converter Introduction - Completed in Just 30 Minutes," we will introduce the fundamentals of DC/DC converters, including the operating principles of regulators.
A voltage regulator is a device that stabilizes voltage.
Electronic products that operate by inserting a plug into an outlet require an "AC/DC converter" that converts AC220V to DC (direct current). This is because most semiconductor components operate only with DC. Additionally, each IC mounted on a set board has different operating voltage ranges and voltage precision requirements. Supplying unstable voltage power can lead to malfunctions or characteristic degradation.
Therefore, a "DC/DC converter" is required to convert or stabilize the voltage to the necessary level.
Numerous types of power supply ICs exist to address various requirements such as input/output voltage, output current, output voltage precision, voltage stabilization speed, cost, mounting area, and noise.
Voltage regulators can be broadly classified into two categories.
The first is the linear regulator.
It is called a "linear regulator" because the relationship between input and output operates linearly. Additionally, because a control element is placed in series between input and output, it is also called a "series regulator."
The second is the switching regulator.
The switch element (MOSFET) is turned ON until the output voltage reaches the required voltage, and power is supplied from input to output. When the output voltage reaches the desired value, the switch element turns OFF, preventing the input voltage from being consumed. Adjusting the output voltage by repeating this operation at high speed is called a switching regulator.
We hope this webinar will be a good opportunity to understand the fundamentals of voltage regulators (LDO, DC/DC).
