LTE Cat.M1 IoT Prototype Development Using Global SIM - Hands-On
Mouser Korea regularly conducts online and offline seminars to assist engineers, and in this webinar we share hands-on practice for LTE Cat.M1 IoT prototype development using global SIM.
1. Introduction to LTE Cat M1
LTE Cat M1 is a cellular network that, alongside LoRa (Long Range) and NB-IoT (Narrowband IoT) among existing LPWAN (Low-Power Wide-Area Network) technologies, can be used not only over short distances but also over long distances.
However, unlike the LTE network we currently use, it is an IoT-dedicated network that offers the advantages of cellular networks while being affordable, with lower costs and limited capacity usage.
2. Why did you choose LTE Cat M1 among various communication specifications for your IoT project?
LoRa is cost-effective and supports long-distance communication, but it requires a LoRa gateway, which is difficult to implement and expensive to deploy. In the case of NB-IoT, while it uses the same cellular network, the affordable capacity is limited to only about 100KB.
In contrast, LTE Cat M1 allows usage of 10MB or more of capacity and retains all the advantages of cellular networks, making it suitable for applications requiring mobile tracking and IoT networks that need to handle larger volumes of data. This is why we decided to introduce it.
3. Demo Practice
There are two main demonstrations.
The first demo shows how to use LTE Cat M1 directly, connecting LTE Cat M1 to your device to enable immediate IoT network communication. This demo uses an Arduino board. It operates using an Arduino board, an LTE Cat M1 modem, and an open-source library we have developed.
The second demo uses Raspberry Pi and LTE Cat M1. Using the same method as LTE tethering, the Raspberry Pi connected with CAT M1 acts as a Wi-Fi gateway, and through this IoT gateway we will demonstrate how to easily implement an IoT network by connecting existing ESP32 boards.

In the seminar, you will be able to see my demonstration and watch it operate. After viewing the seminar, if you use the GitHub code site (github.com/codezoo-ltd), you can refer to the uploaded circuit diagrams, source code, and hands-on guide books. If you have Arduino boards, LTE Cat M1, Raspberry Pi, and ESP32 kits available, you will be able to try them out directly.
Many developers are facing difficult times due to COVID-19, and it takes considerable time to acquire and learn new technologies. When working with LTE Cat M1 in the conventional way, you would start with just the AT command reference guide, but even that requires a lot of time to develop an actual product.
Through this simplified open-source library, LTE Cat M1 modules, and various resources provided in the webinar, we will help you implement solutions easily and quickly, create your own prototypes, and proceed with development on your desired projects successfully.
