Global Trends in Electric Vehicle Control and MCU Requirements
Interest in electric vehicles has recently been heating up among automotive manufacturers and drivers.
Electric vehicles are eco-friendly solutions that reduce exhaust emissions from automobiles and enable compliance with each country's automotive carbon dioxide emission regulations.
Electric vehicles are equipped with electronic control devices such as high-voltage batteries, power conversion devices, and high-capacity inverter motors that were not found in internal combustion engines, enabling the vehicle to operate.
At Infineon, the controllers required to operate electric vehicles are collectively referred to as Electrical Drive Train (EDT). The controllers included in EDT are responsible for vehicle performance as well as safety and security, requiring stable real-time high-efficiency computation.
To achieve this, multiple high-performance Microcontroller Units (MCUs) are mounted, and corresponding software is being developed in parallel.
Infineon's MCU products have been applied to the powertrain of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles for a very long time, and continue to be highly favored by major automotive OEMs worldwide.
Based on this technological capability and expertise, Infineon is not resting on past achievements but continues to develop and mass-produce MCUs for EDT applications that will be applied to future electric vehicles while maintaining high software compatibility.
