Analog Devices' integrated optical module reduces false alarms in smoke detectors and meets new regulatory standards.

Analog Devices, Inc. introduces the ADPD188BI, an integrated optical module featuring 2 LEDs, a photodiode, and an analog front end (AFE) integrated together in a single package.

The high-performance AFE offers high ambient noise rejection and reduces power consumption to extend battery life. The two LEDs help reduce false alarms often caused by vapor and dust. False alarms are a major factor causing consumers to remove or disable smoke detectors.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly 1 in 4 deaths (23%) in the United States occurred in locations where smoke detectors were not functioning or malfunctioning.

The ADPD188BI is designed to meet the latest UL217 requirements and EN54/14604 specifications.

The integrated design uses two colors to separate particle size, enabling enhanced capability to detect and classify smoke types and reject nuisance sources. The ADI solution positions LEDs closer to the photodiode, enabling a backscatter design that reduces circuit board size and allows for smaller smoke detectors that are more architecturally compatible for residential and commercial applications.
