# Android Open Accessory (ADK) Introduction Android Open Accessory (ADK) is a specification and reference implementation that enables Android-powered devices to interact with external hardware accessories. The ADK allows developers to create custom hardware that can communicate with Android applications through a standardized USB communication protocol. The ADK framework provides a set of APIs and hardware guidelines that simplify the development process for both software and hardware engineers. It supports multiple communication methods including USB host mode and USB accessory mode, allowing flexible integration of accessories with Android devices. The key features of ADK include: - Standardized USB communication protocol for reliable data exchange - Support for various Android versions and devices - Simplified development process through reference implementations - Power management capabilities for battery-powered accessories - Flexible architecture supporting diverse accessory types Developers can use the ADK to create a wide range of accessories such as sensors, controllers, displays, and IoT devices that seamlessly integrate with Android-powered smartphones and tablets.

Google I/O 2011 was held in the United States last May. With approximately 5,000 Android developers and related professionals in attendance, Google introduced new technologies and innovative ideas suited to a new era in 2011. The most notable highlight from this entire session was Google's formidable Android technological capabilities—specifically, the new development proposal and development interface, the ADK, that was presented to existing engineers.



Android Development Kit. This opened the door to new device development not only for semi-engineers but also for engineers unfamiliar with programming (particularly hardware engineers)—a domain previously exclusive to experienced programmers. This directly contradicted the past approach that required multiple development organizations and departments, and represented a remarkable and groundbreaking shift that would give birth to true IT prosumers. Unfortunately, since all sessions were conducted in English, it appears that domestic engineers were unable to gain a deeper understanding. Consequently, we have reorganized the Google I/O ADK session content from May in Korean and wish to introduce it to you. In addition, while introducing this Korean-language ADK Webinar, we plan to introduce the first domestically planned Android ADK and proceed with collaborative development limited to seminar participants.
