Diagnosing System Status and Tuning Gate Resistance Values with SiC MOSFET Evaluation Boards
SiC MOSFETs are more expensive than silicon devices, but they have the advantage of high efficiency and compact size. However, if system design is not optimized, not only can these advantages not be utilized, but system reliability can also be compromised.
In this webinar, we introduce what tests are conducted to verify "whether the selected device is appropriate" and "whether a suitable gate resistance value has been selected" using an actual SiC MOSFET evaluation board. We will present tuning methods including test procedures and actual waveforms.
1. We introduce test methods for diagnosing the state of systems where SiC MOSFETs and most semiconductor devices are used, and for selecting an optimized gate resistance. This method, called the "Double Pulse Test" by Infineon, is a test method used not only by Infineon but also by many other companies. We explain how to set up and perform the double pulse test.
2. Using an evaluation board consisting of a TO-247 3-Pin SiC MOSFET and 1ED3491 drive IC, we present how gate resistance is selected through the actual double pulse test process.
3. We introduce how to measure Eon and Eoff in the current system from the selected gate resistance.
4. We introduce how to verify that the system's protection function operates properly through a short-circuit test.
5. Finally, we explain the strengths of Infineon's SiC MOSFET and drive IC compared to competitors, and introduce useful evaluation boards that can be effectively utilized.
