# Optimizing Wireless Devices with the Kickstart Battery Simulator App

As battery-powered devices have become a key element of daily life, battery performance has become an important factor in device design. Primary or disposable batteries are used everywhere for common applications such as powering remote controllers, flashlights, and radios. These are most commonly seen in the form of alkaline batteries or older zinc-carbon batteries.
However, rechargeable or secondary batteries are now commonly and increasingly being used in place of disposable batteries in electronic devices such as laptops, mobile phones, and digital cameras.
Common types of rechargeable batteries include Li-ion (lithium-ion) and Ni-MH (nickel-metal hydride). Because battery performance is important in daily life and battery types are diverse, test and design engineers working with battery-powered devices need methods to optimize device performance and battery life.
To optimize battery life in IoT devices, it can be useful to test device performance at different "State of Charge (SOC)" and "Open Circuit Voltage (VOC)". For example, VOC typically operates from a fully charged 4.2V down to 3V. Design and test engineers want to verify that the device operates properly or shuts down at all voltages before becoming unstable due to low power. Using Keithley's KickStart software allows you to set the SOC of the simulated battery even during simulation.
This webinar introduces the Battery Simulator App of Tektronix/Keithley KickStart software, the 2281S power supply, and the 2380 electronic load functions that enable battery performance analysis for smart wearable medical devices and other applications.
