Strengthening Advanced Power Semiconductor Supply Chain for European and Global Customers with $2 Billion Investment
In cooperation with the Czech government, an incentive package is being prepared to support investment. In the Czech Republic, ON Semiconductor produces its intelligent power semiconductors, which are essential for improving energy efficiency in applications such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, and AI data centers.
Onsemi announced today that it plans to establish a state-of-the-art vertically integrated SiC manufacturing facility in the Czech Republic.
This is to converge and respond to the unprecedented demand for advanced power semiconductors that can optimize energy conversion and management as electrification, renewable energy, and AI become global megatrends.
Onsemi plans to expand its SiC manufacturing through brownfield investments of up to $2 billion over the next several years, as part of its previously disclosed long-term capital expenditure targets.
This investment builds on ONSemi’s current operations in the Czech Republic, including silicon crystal growth, silicon and SiC wafer manufacturing (polishing and EPI), and a silicon wafer fab.
The facility is currently capable of producing more than 3 million wafers per year, including more than 1 billion power devices.
Once all final regulatory and incentive approvals are obtained, this will be one of the largest private sector investments in Czech history.
Onsemi is located in Central EuropeOnsemi is one of the first companies to invest in advanced semiconductor manufacturing. This announcement reflects Onsemi’s strategy of expanding market share and advancing technology to strengthen the resilience of the semiconductor supply chain.
“Our brownfield investment will help build the Central European supply chain to better serve our customers’ rapidly growing demand for innovative technologies that improve the energy efficiency of their applications,” said Hassane El-Khoury, CEO of ONSemi. “Working closely with the Czech government, we are strengthening the production of intelligent power semiconductors, which are essential to achieving the European Union’s ambition to significantly reduce carbon emissions and environmental impact.”
