2023 Sustainability Report Released, Carbon Emissions Reduction Achievements
2030 Scope 1·2·3 Carbon Emission Reduction Target SBTi Certification Obtained
Applied Materials, a global leader in materials engineering solutions, has demonstrated significant progress in reducing carbon emissions, sourcing 100% of its electricity consumption in the U.S. and 70% of its electricity consumption worldwide from renewable energy sources.
Applied announced on the 1st that it has released its latest '2023 Sustainability Report'.
This report details Applied’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint over the past year and its work with customers to advance sustainability in the semiconductor industry.
The semiconductor industry is expected to see its revenue opportunities double by the end of the 2020s as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) proliferate, but its carbon footprint is expected to quadruple over the same period.
To address this imbalance, Applied Materials developed the Net Zero 2040 Playbook, a joint collaboration plan between the company and the semiconductor industry to reduce carbon emissions.
Applied will continue to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources in the U.S. by 2023 and will increase its global renewable energy use to 70%.
The Austin, Texas, Logistics Service Center has commissioned the largest rooftop solar array in Central Texas. The projected annual power production capacity is 8.2 million kWh, enough to power approximately 1,100 households.
Applied Materials’ 2030 Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions reduction targets have been certified by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).
Applied Materials works closely with key customers, suppliers, and partners to reduce the semiconductor industry’s carbon footprint.
As the first corporate sponsor of Schneider Electric’s new partnership program, Catalize, we are working with other leading companies to significantly increase access to renewable energy across the global semiconductor value chain.
Applied Materials is a founding member and board member of the Semiconductor Climate Consortium, a global effort to decarbonize the semiconductor industry.
“As technology advances change our world at an unprecedented pace, the semiconductor industry must dramatically increase global semiconductor production while also finding ways to achieve net zero,” said Gary Dickerson, Applied Materials chairman and CEO. “This is a complex challenge that no single company or country can tackle alone. Applied is committed to collaborating across the semiconductor supply chain to develop and deploy innovative solutions and reduce our environmental impact.”
Applied has been publishing reports on social responsibility and environmental issues since 2005. More information about Applied’s environmental activities, sustainability reporting, culture of inclusion, and human rights initiatives can be found on the Applied website.
