AMD-based 'El Capitan' listed as world's fastest supercomputer
EPYC 9005 and Instinct accelerator combination provides outstanding performance
Half of the world's fastest supercomputers are built on AMD, solidifying AMD's position as a powerhouse in high performance computing (HPC).
AMD announced on the 19th that it has demonstrated its leadership in high-performance computing at Supercomputing 2024 (SC 2024) by listing an AMD-based supercomputer on the Top500 list of the world's fastest supercomputers for the sixth consecutive time.
El Capitan, listed as the world's most powerful computer, is operated by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in the United States, built by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE).
The El Capitan supercomputer is powered by AMD Instinct MI300A APUs and has a High-Performance Linpack (HPL) score of 1.742 exaflops.
In addition, the El Capitan and Frontier systems at Oak Ridge National Lab are each on the Green500 list.Ranking 18th and 22nd respectively, they once again demonstrate the outstanding performance and energy efficiency of AMD EPYCTM processors and AMD Instinct GPUs in supporting high-performance computing workloads.
El Capitan is used to enhance scientific exploration and national security, enhance the ability to perform large-scale 3D simulations, and expand the possibilities for new discoveries in a variety of scientific research fields through AI and machine learning-based data analysis.
Meanwhile, 50% of the world's top 10 fastest supercomputers and 40% of the top 10 most energy-efficient supercomputers are powered by AMD technology, and AMD's compute engines provide exceptional performance for technical research computing in corporations and national laboratories around the world.
AMD's key HPC products include the AMD EPYC 9005 Series Processor, which delivers ultimate performance in AI and cloud environments, and the AMD Instinct accelerator, which provides high performance for a variety of data center and AI solutions.
“We are thrilled that El Capitan has broken the exaFLOP barrier and become the world’s second fastest AMD-based supercomputer,” said Forrest Norrod, senior vice president and general manager, AMD. “This groundbreaking computer, which demonstrates the exceptional performance and efficiency of the AMD Instinct MI300 APU, is a testament to the dedicated collaboration between AMD, LLNL and HPE. AMD will continue to drive the future of computing with leading-edge performance and capabilities that redefine the convergence of HPC and AI.”
