Comprehensive onboard feature set, fast time to market
Nordic is launching a platform to simplify cellular IoT and Wi-Fi location prototyping, enabling rapid and streamlined early development of IoT applications.
Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in low-power wireless connectivity solutions, today announces the launch of its latest IoT prototyping platform, the Nordic Thingy:91 X.
Thingy:91 X streamlines the IoT prototyping process with a comprehensive set of onboard features, enabling more efficient development of cellular IoT applications and faster time to market.
The Thingy:91 X features the recently released nRF9151 System-in-Package (SiP) and is battery-operated.
The nRF9151 is the smallest cellular IoT SiP capable of supporting battery-powered global positioning applications, with a 20% smaller footprint than Nordic’s existing nRF9160 and nRF9161 Series.
It is also exempt from US tariffs and has obtained the certifications required for global operation. This SiP supports LTE-M, NB-IoT, GNSS and DECT NR+ technologies.
The Thingy:91 X is equipped with multiple sensors to monitor environmental conditions and track movement, as well as user-programmable buttons and LEDs and multiple antennas.
Additionally, the 1,350mAh rechargeable lithium polymer (Li-Po) battery ensures excellent battery life and precise fuel metering via Nordic’s nPM1300 power management IC (PMIC).
It comes pre-loaded with SIM cards from Onomondo and Wireless Logic to provide instant cellular IoT connectivity.
This IoT prototyping platform connects easily during initial setup to the nRF Cloud web interface, a cloud services platform optimized for Nordic’s wireless solutions, and can accurately identify the location of the Thingy:91 X.
The Thingy:91 X also integrates Nordic’s nRF7002 Wi-Fi companion IC, allowing Wi-Fi SSID (Service Set Identifier) location functionality to complement other positioning technologies.
This IoT prototyping platform supports a variety of positioning technologies, including single-cell (SCELL) and multi-cell (MCELL)-based cellular, as well as Wi-Fi and GNSS, and when combined with the nRF Cloud Location Service, allows developers to perfectly balance location accuracy and power consumption. This makes the Thingy:91 X an ideal solution for asset tracking applications in particular.
“The Thingy:91 X is the easiest solution to develop for cellular IoT applications,” says Oyvind Birkenes, Senior Vice President of the Long Range Wireless Solutions business line at Nordic Semiconductor. “Nordic is helping customers get to market faster by integrating all the tools and solutions needed to develop advanced cellular IoT products into an easy-to-use, out-of-the-box platform.”
