Power Management IC nPM2100, Ultra-High Efficiency Boost Regulator, Energy Saving Features

Nordic Semiconductor significantly extends battery life for primary cell-based low energy Bluetooth with new power management IC.

Nordic recently launched a new power management IC (PMIC) model, the nPM2100.

This product features an ultra-high-efficiency boost regulator and various energy-saving features that can significantly extend the battery life of primary cell-based Bluetooth low energy products.

It is particularly suitable for a wide range of applications, including wireless mice, keyboards, consumer asset tracking devices, remote controls, and body-worn medical devices.

“Primary batteries will continue to play an important role, as not all IoT products can rely on rechargeable batteries or energy harvesting,” says Geir Kjosavik, PMIC Product Director at Nordic Semiconductor. “The nPM2100 can extend the battery replacement cycle of a product, or make the product smaller and lighter by providing the same battery life with a smaller battery,” he emphasized.

The nPM2100 can manage the power supply of low-power System-on-Chips (SoCs) or microcontrollers (MCUs) such as Nordic's nRF52, nRF53, and nRF54 series.

This PMIC is optimized for miniaturization and maximum efficiency, and is easily configurable via an I2C-compatible Two Wire Interface (TWI).

This allows you to easily set up a variety of advanced features, including Ship Mode and precise battery fuel measurement.

It also features two GPIOs as an alternative to serial communication, providing time-sensitive control capabilities.

The nPM2100 supports a wide range of primary battery applications, including one or two AA/AAA/LRxx batteries, single 3V LiMnO2 cells, silver oxide batteries, and zinc-air coin cell batteries.

This device operates over an input voltage range of 0.7 V to 3.4 V and features a boost regulator that provides an output range of 1.8 V to 3.3 V.

It can supply up to 150mA of current and power load switches and LDOs to meet various voltage requirements.

It is also one of the most efficient boost regulators on the market, boasting 150nA of constant current (IQ) consumption and power conversion efficiency of up to 95% at 50mA and 90.5% at 10μA.

The nPM2100 can measure the remaining battery capacity more accurately through a fuel measurement function based on a precision algorithm.

This allows users to use all of the battery’s energy with confidence. , and software-based fuel metering adds minimal load to the battery.
