Proving South Korea's Global Technological Competitiveness
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) will introduce Korea's cutting-edge network technology to the world stage through MWC25.
ETRI announced on the 28th that it will unveil the latest research results on next-generation 6G, satellite communications, and defense 5G networks at the 'Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025', the world's largest mobile exhibition held in Barcelona, Spain.
At this year's MWC, ETRI plans to introduce Korea's cutting-edge network technology to the world and expand cooperation with global research institutes and companies to lead digital innovation.
ETRI will unveil next-generation 6G mobile communication and network technologies, satellite IoT-NTN (non-terrestrial network) technologies, and defense 5G network trust linkage technologies at the exhibition. Through these, it plans to demonstrate Korea’s global technological competitiveness.
ETRI is developing next-generation 6G mobile communication and network technologies with the goal of commercialization in 2030. 6G technology provides speeds more than 10 times faster than existing 5G and enables high-speed, realistic remote services.
In addition, it is key to realize intelligence and optimization of communication services through AI/ML and SW-based network paradigm changes.
The exhibition will showcase ultra-large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (E-MIMO) technology in the upper mid-band frequency range, virtualized radio access network (vRAN), sub-terahertz (Sub-THz) wireless transmission technology with a transmission speed of 200 Gbps, AI-based radio access network technology (AI-RAN), and low-power open radio access network (O-RAN) technology.
These technologies are expected to become essential infrastructure for various ultra-high-speed realistic interactive services in the future 6G era, such as metaverse/XR, autonomous driving, urban air traffic (UAM), smart factories, and remote medical care/surgery.
ETRI will also present satellite IoT-NTN (non-terrestrial network) technology that can expand networks not only on land but also at sea and in the air.
The key is to provide continuous IoT services across the globe by utilizing low-orbit small satellite constellations.
It includes ultra-low-power satellite IoT terminals, satellite-to-satellite cooperative communication technology, and handover technology for optimal connection between satellites and terrestrial networks.
This will enable stable Internet and IoT services to be provided even in areas where existing mobile networks do not reach.
Network technology utilizing low-orbit satellites is expected to be utilized in various fields such as autonomous ships, disaster response, and climate monitoring.
ETRI introduces 5G trust network technology that can be utilized in the defense field.
The Defense Trusted Mobile Network (M-TMN) to be released will support real-time data sharing and secure communications during military operations using 5G commercial networks. It is a technology that does it.
It includes defense-grade mobile edge computing (MEC) that can be mounted on vehicles, defense-specific mobile core networks, and AI-based network quality analysis capabilities.
It is designed to analyze network conditions using AI and maintain an optimal communication environment, and its security has been strengthened to enable stable network connection even during military operations by connecting to the defense network through a 5G commercial base station.
It is expected that these technologies will enable safe and efficient 5G-based operations and information sharing in the defense sector.
ETRI plans to showcase Korea's cutting-edge network technology at MWC 2025 and strengthen cooperation with global ICT companies and research institutes.
At the exhibition booth, you can experience first-hand how the actual technology is implemented, and there will also be technology explanation sessions conducted by researchers.
ETRI President Seung-chan Bang said, “Through this MWC, we will demonstrate to the world that Korea has the technological prowess to lead the future network industry. We will continue innovative research and development in the fields of 6G, satellite IoT, and defense 5G networks to establish ourselves as a global ICT powerhouse.”
