SK Telecom CEO Yoo Young-sang has officially apologized for the recent large-scale cyberattack and stated that he will take full responsibility for any damage caused by illegal SIM card cloning.

SKT CEO Yoo Young-sang attended a hearing held by the National Assembly Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee on the 30th.

CEO Yoo Young-sang said, “I deeply apologize for any inconvenience this accident may have caused,” and added, “We feel responsible and are focusing all our capabilities on recovering from the accident and protecting our customers.”

SK Telecom first became aware of the hacking breach on April 18, but admitted that it missed the legal deadline for reporting it.

After confirming the leak on April 19, we immediately reported it to the Personal Information Protection Commission and informed customers of the incident through our website and mobile platform.

In particular, customer anxiety has grown as the possibility of SIM card information being leaked has been raised due to this hack.

Regarding this, CEO Yoo Young-sang explained, “Public certificates and phone book stored in the SIM card are information that cannot be copied through illegal SIM card duplication,” and “You can prevent damage caused by illegal SIM card duplication by signing up for the SIM card protection service.”
> SKT is implementing the following measures to protect customers: △FDS system to detect and prevent illegal SIM duplication, △SIM protection service to block illegal device changes by linking SIM and terminal, and △SIM replacement support.

The number of current SIM card protection service subscribers has exceeded 10 million, and the goal is to protect 20 million by the weekend.

In order to resolve customer inconvenience regarding SIM card replacement, we plan to secure an additional 5 million SIM cards each in May and June.

CEO Yoo Young-sang promised, “We will ensure that all customers can replace their SIM cards as soon as possible,” and “We will take full responsibility for any damage caused by illegal SIM card duplication.”
