“We will accelerate the popularization of mobile AI by installing Galaxy AI in 200 million products by the end of this year,” said Samsung Electronics MX (Mobile eXperience) Business Division President and CEO Noh Tae-moon at the ‘Samsung Galaxy Unpacked’ press conference held in Paris, France on July 10 (local time).

Samsung Electronics' first AI foldable phones, the 'Galaxy Z Fold 6' and 'Galaxy Z Flip 6' have been unveiled. It is introduced that along with improvements in specifications such as thickness, weight, and battery, the on-device AI function equipped in the Galaxy S24 series has been innovated by meeting the foldable form factor.

Samsung Electronics held the 'Galaxy Unpacked 2024' event in Paris, France on the 10th (local time) and unveiled new products including the Galaxy Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Watch 7 and Ultra, and Galaxy Buds 3 series.

■ Thinner and better performance, price increase is inevitable
Both models are equipped with the 3rd generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 for Galaxy, a mobile AP that was also equipped in the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This chipset is evaluated to have a 42% improvement in neural processing unit (NPU) performance, a 19% improvement in graphics processing unit (GPU), and an 18% improvement in CPU (central processing unit) performance compared to its predecessor.

The Flip 6 has improved performance compared to its predecessor. It is equipped with a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. AI zoom enables up to 10x zoom. The battery has also increased from 3700mAh to 4000mAh. It weighs the same as its predecessor at 187g, and the RAM has increased to 12GB.

The Fold 6 has a larger screen and is lighter. The screen is a 6.3-inch cover screen with a 22.1:9 ratio. It weighs 239g, which is 14g lighter than its predecessor. It is also the thinnest ever, at 12.1mm when folded, which is 1.3mm lighter than its predecessor. The camera performance is the same, including a 50 million main lens, and the battery is the same as its predecessor at 4400mAh and the RAM is 12GB.

The design has also been improved, with the Fold 6 providing a more natural bar when the cover screen is folded. Durability has been enhanced with the 'Armor Aluminum' frame and 'Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus® 2'. The structure and design of the dual rail hinge have also evolved to better disperse external impact. Samsung Electronics explained that the heat dissipation system has also evolved, with the Fold 6 having a larger 'Vapor Chamber', and the Flip 6 being the first in the Flip series to be equipped with a vapor chamber.

The price has increased slightly along with the improved specifications. The Flip 6 is released at △1,485,000 won (256GB) and △1,643,400 won (512GB), which are 85,800 won and 123,200 won higher than the previous model. The Fold 6 is △2,229,700 won (216GB) △2,388,100 won (512GB) △2,704,900 won (1TB), which is 132,000 won, 169,400 won, and 244,200 won more expensive respectively.

Galaxy AI features that are only available on foldables have been added. The Flip 6 has added ‘reply recommendation’ by utilizing ‘Flex Window’. When you reply to a messenger without a keyboard, it analyzes the conversation with the other person and suggests a reply. It is expected that you will be able to easily reply even while on the move. Widgets such as ‘Samsung Health’ and ‘Media Player’ have also been added. ‘Phone decoration’ has also become easier with the ‘Style Recommendation’ function.

The 'Interpreter' function is also available in the Flex Window. In the 'Conversation Mode' on the foldable's dual screen, the user and the other party can talk while simultaneously checking the translated text on the main screen and the cover screen in real time. If you set the newly added 'Listening Mode', the text will be displayed on the screen in real time when listening to foreign language lectures, etc. In particular, two-way 'Live Translate' can now be used in various apps, including KakaoTalk, Line, Google Meet, WhatsApp, and Telegram, in addition to the basic phone app.

There is also 'FlexCam' that launches the camera directly from the Flex Window. After folding the Flip 6 in half and placing it on the stand, take a picture with the rear camera using the Flex Window, and the AI 'Auto Zoom' function recognizes the subject size and optimizes the photo composition.

The camera experience has also evolved with the AI-based Provisual Engine. △'Photo Assist' has been enhanced to allow editing of professional-level content. △'Portrait Studio' function transforms portrait photos into various styles, such as 3D characters and watercolors. △The 'Instant Slow-mo' function allows you to save videos converted to slow motion, so you can share them immediately with friends or family.

Also, the new 'Sketch to image' feature added to the Fold 6 allows you to draw a sketch with the S Pen on top of a photo or note in the gallery, and the generative AI will transform the simple sketch into an elaborate image. For example, if you draw over the eyes of a photo of a dog in the gallery, an actual image of sunglasses will be created.

Samsung Electronics has expanded its collaboration with Google to include the latest Google Gemini app. To call up the AI assistant, users swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen or say, “Hey Google.” The “Gemini overlay” will launch, providing a variety of assistance, including information acquisition, writing, and planning. Gemini is linked to the Google Maps and YouTube apps.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics will sequentially launch it worldwide, including in Korea, starting on the 24th. Pre-orders in Korea will be held for a week from the 12th to the 18th. The Flip 6 will be released in Blue, Silver Shadow, Yellow, and Mint, and the Fold 6 will be released in Silver Shadow, Pink, and Navy.
