# Wi-SUN Latest Trends - Newly Expanding Enhanced HAN and FAN Wi-SUN is a wireless communication standard based on IEEE 802.15.4g that enables low-power, long-range mesh networking. The standard has been evolving to support various applications, and recently there have been significant developments in Enhanced HAN (Home Area Network) and FAN (Field Area Network) segments. Enhanced HAN represents an advancement in home energy management systems, extending connectivity beyond traditional smart meter applications to encompass a broader range of smart home devices. This expansion allows for more comprehensive monitoring and control of residential energy consumption patterns. FAN applications are increasingly deployed in utility management and industrial IoT scenarios, where Wi-SUN's mesh networking capabilities provide reliable connectivity across extended geographical areas with minimal infrastructure investment. The enhanced versions support improved interoperability and extended feature sets tailored to meet evolving market demands. These developments reflect the growing adoption of Wi-SUN technology across diverse sectors, driven by its advantages in power efficiency, range capability, and network scalability compared to competing wireless standards.

In this webinar, ROHM, a major member company of Wi-SUN (Wireless Smart Utility Network), will introduce a new communication method for the IoT market. 

To realize IoT, internationally standardized wireless communication technology is required.

However, despite the existence of many IoT wireless communication standards, most of them are not internationally standardized. Such systems owned by individuals or specific companies are difficult to implement in public systems serving millions of users.

Wi-SUN is a technology based on the IEEE 802.15.4g standard, utilizing short-range wireless communication in the 900MHz band. The Wi-SUN Alliance, established in 2011, provides relevant standard specifications and certification systems.

Wi-SUN technology targeting smart metering is unfamiliar domestically, but with significant utility value in the power sector, Wi-SUN is expected to become established as a new wireless communication technology in the future.


Currently, Wi-SUN is most widely used in the United States and Japan. Notably, according to Tokyo Electric Power's AMI construction plan, Wi-SUN is used in 70% of Tokyo Electric Power's AMI communication network.

The Wi-SUN Alliance, which is leading Wi-SUN technology, is a non-profit organization established in Japan in 2012 following the completion of IEEE 802.15.4g standardization, and is currently headquartered in the United States.

The Wi-SUN Alliance is promoting global certification and expansion of Wi-SUN wireless solutions with interoperability based on the IEEE 802.15.4g standard for use in smart utilities, smart cities, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications requiring FAN (Field Area Network) functionality, utilizing open global standards.


In particular, this webinar will introduce the latest specifications of ROHM's Wi-SUN standard: HAN and FAN.

Wi-SUN HAN is primarily a communication standard between next-generation smart meters and home energy management systems (HEMS). The other is a communication specification between HEMS and devices such as appliances, solar cells, and storage batteries.

Additionally, there is an extended Enhanced HAN equipped with functions to address devices such as relay functionality and power-saving modes for battery-driven devices and energy-efficient equipment.


Wi-SUN FAN is for smart metering, smart grids enabling distribution automation and infrastructure management, intelligent transportation systems, and smart lighting.

In this system, data obtained from sensors, meters, and monitors primarily installed outdoors is transmitted to the cloud, and sensors, meters, and monitors can be controlled from the cloud as needed. 

We hope this webinar will provide a good opportunity to understand the latest Wi-SUN technology that is receiving attention in the IoT market.
