e4ds news held the 'e4ds Semiconductor Technology Conference 2021 Spring' via online webinar on April 28.

Ahn Ki-hyun, Executive Director of the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, who participated in the conference, delivered a presentation on 'Recent Issues and Responses in the Semiconductor Industry,' introducing the semiconductor industry as a whole and providing a market outlook for the future.

Regarding automotive semiconductors, which are currently the subject of recent issues, Executive Director Ahn Ki-hyun stated, "Semiconductor production takes a minimum of three months or more, and due to conservative semiconductor orders from automobile companies this year, the production volume of automotive semiconductors has not kept pace with the sudden surge in demand, resulting in a supply shortage." He also noted that "given the foundry business model of pre-scheduling production capacity, even with current orders, it will be difficult to easily increase supply volumes."

He further predicted that "as a result of this situation, the automotive semiconductor market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of over 10%, while foundry capacity expansions are increasing at an average annual rate of only 4.1%, meaning the imbalance between demand and supply will persist, and automotive semiconductor supply shortages are expected to continue for some time."

Regarding the semiconductor market overall, he projected an average annual growth rate of 5.1% from 2019 to 2024. With the full-scale advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution driven by AI, big data, and related technologies, the market is expected to continue rising. While PCs and mobile devices dominated the market in the past, IoT, robotics, and data centers are expected to drive the semiconductor market going forward.
