Development Trends in Automotive Semiconductor Technology
e4ds news held the 'e4ds Semiconductor Technology Conference 2021 Spring' through an online webinar on April 28th.

At the conference, Gyou-bong Yeon, Center Director of the Korea Automotive Research Institute, presented on 'Development Trends in Automotive Semiconductor Technology'.

Director Yeon emphasized that semiconductors have become increasingly critical for autonomous driving, and predicted that the importance of reliability would grow as the proportion of semiconductors in vehicles increases.

The Automotive Parts Research Institute is currently conducting a core components development project for Level 3 autonomous vehicles, and announced the completion of 9 components including △digital maps △RADAR △LiDAR △camera △integrated positioning △V2X communication △ADR △integrated DCU △HVI, as well as △dedicated roads △urban field demonstrations.

Additionally, the institute mentioned that it has initiated follow-up projects targeting Level 4 and Level 5.

He also stated that automotive semiconductors are highly dependent on imports and require localization, and emphasized the importance of securing reliability through collaborative efforts between module manufacturers and complete vehicle producers.

As automotive companies are increasingly entering semiconductor design themselves, he predicted that the importance of automotive semiconductors will continue to grow in the future.

In particular, he forecasted that for autonomous driving, the environment will shift towards a system where the cockpit's main artificial intelligence processor controls the entire vehicle, and noted that the configuration of automotive semiconductors is transitioning to a centralized architecture.

Furthermore, as connectivity increases between existing non-safety systems and safety systems, the importance of functional safety for automotive system semiconductors is also increasing. He emphasized that securing in-vehicle system semiconductor reliability technology is critical to enable its application in vehicle safety systems.
