Ministry of Science and ICT to Increase Public Frequency Supply by More Than 4 Times Compared to Last Year

Phased Frequency Supply According to Each Agency's Circumstances
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it will significantly expand frequency supply related to national safety and protection. In 2019, the frequency supply bandwidth for public sectors including disaster safety, maritime, aviation, and meteorology will total 336.4 MHz, a substantial increase from 81 MHz last year.
On the 16th, the Ministry of Science and ICT held a 'Public Frequency Policy Council' meeting to finalize the 2019 public frequency supply and demand plan including these matters.
At the meeting attended by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and National Fire Agency, discussions were held on issues related to public frequency use by each agency and efficient utilization methods of frequencies in addition to the supply and demand plan.
The Ministry of Science and ICT has been establishing and implementing supply and demand plans by receiving future frequency requirements from public institutions every year for efficient supply of public frequencies.
Accordingly, frequency utilization plans (285 cases) were submitted by 148 public institutions in March of last year, and the '2019 Public Frequency Supply and Demand Plan' was prepared through a series of procedures including appropriateness surveys, analyses, and evaluations.
Establishment Procedure for Public Frequency Supply and Demand Plan
The appropriateness evaluation of demand was conducted according to objective evaluation criteria including domestic and international frequency trends, supply necessity, and policy alignment, and the results were reflected in the supply and demand plan through expert consultation.
Main Contents of the 2019 Public Frequency Supply and Demand Plan
Min Won-gi, Vice Minister of Science and ICT, stated, "Public frequencies are utilized in services directly related to the public's daily life, so determining their use has significant importance," and added, "We hope this decision will meet the public's expectations for strengthening social safety networks and expanding various public services."
The Ministry of Science and ICT will notify the relevant agencies of the '2019 Public Frequency Supply and Demand Plan' and plans to supply frequencies in stages according to each agency's project implementation and wireless station establishment schedule.
Additionally, this year the Ministry plans to promote frequency utilization efficiency, role expansion, and improvement of the supply and demand system so that public frequencies can be better utilized in areas truly needed by our society.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel.
