The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has launched the 'Green NCAP Expert Council' (hereinafter referred to as the 'Council') and will work with industry, academia and research institutes to develop automobile eco-friendly performance evaluation technology.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will hold its first meeting on the 17th at the Westin Chosun Seoul with a consultative body of 27 industry, academia, research, and government agencies to develop eco-friendly performance evaluation technology for automobiles.

The council is composed of a general subcommittee that discusses the introduction of the Green NCAP system, which evaluates and discloses the environmental friendliness of automobiles, including their life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions and indoor air quality, and subcommittees for the three main technology sectors of the 'Korean Green NCAP Evaluation Technology Development Project' (hereinafter referred to as the 'Green NCAP Project'): fuel efficiency and greenhouse gases, LCA, and indoor air quality.

The Korea Transportation Safety Authority is the responsible research institute, and the total project cost is 25 billion won, and the project will be carried out from May 2023 to December 2026.

The council will provide a forum for communication to enhance the acceptability of the Green NCAP system, centered around the general division, and will also perform a technical review and advisory role to ensure the successful promotion of Green NCAP projects by technology sector.

Jeon Hyeong-pil, Director of the Mobility Automobile Bureau at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, “The Green NCAP project is being developed into a system that evaluates both automobile safety and eco-friendly performance, while Korea is leading the international market in the full-cycle emission evaluation method.”“This will serve as the basis for the Green NCAP project,” he said, adding, “We ask that the results of the discussion be carefully reviewed when promoting the Green NCAP project and actively reflected in the future Green NCAP system.”
