Fortinet Builds High-Performance Firewall for Yahoo Japan Subsidiary 'GYAO!'

Fortinet Korea, a network security solutions company, announced today that Yahoo Japan has deployed Fortinet's high-performance firewall 'FortiGate-3700D' to enhance the performance and security of its subsidiary GYAO!'s video delivery network infrastructure.
Last year, Yahoo Japan conducted rigorous testing of Fortinet's solution against competing products from other vendors, and ultimately selected the 'FortiGate-3700D,' which received the highest evaluation for possessing five key capabilities including exceptional performance and stability capable of handling traffic increases.
GYAO!, a subsidiary of Yahoo Japan, is Japan's largest video site providing video content free of charge, including movies, TV series, animation, variety shows, documentaries, sports, and music videos. As the need for viewing video on smart devices has increased and high-definition content and mobile users have surged, GYAO! actively reviewed upgrades to its network infrastructure. Consequently, after conducting a thorough evaluation with network stability and reliability as key considerations, GYAO! decided to deploy the 'FortiGate-3700D,' which supports fast speeds and low latency.
Shinji Yoshinaga, Senior Manager overseeing Yahoo Japan's site operations, stated, "We needed a stable infrastructure capable of seamlessly handling massive access capacity. Since deploying the FortiGate-3700D, we have been achieving remarkable results. This appliance effectively manages large-scale content files and sessions without excessive resource consumption, and supports stable operations even under massive traffic loads," he added.
GYAO! Content Processes 1 Million Requests per Second and 800 Gbps Traffic
Requires Strong Security and High-Performance Processing Capabilities
GYAO!'s content is delivered from data centers located in Kanto and Kansai regions in Japan, handling 1 million requests per second and 800 Gbps traffic. GYAO!'s firewall must provide robust security functions capable of preventing bottlenecks at internet access points and deliver high-speed, high-performance processing capabilities. Accordingly, Yahoo Japan carefully reviewed five critical firewall capabilities: the ability to acquire logs without loss, the ability to consolidate networks using 40Gbps interfaces, high availability, low power consumption, and appliance footprint.
To meet these requirements, five 'FortiGate-3700D' units were deployed in data centers located in both Kanto and Kansai regions. Yahoo Japan fulfills firewall requirements related to network consolidation through 40Gbps interfaces, utilizing 40GbE (4 ports) and 10GbE (28 ports) interfaces for 2 40GbE uplink ports and 8 10GbE downlink ports.
Through the new infrastructure, GYAO! is now able to provide users with newer, higher-quality content, enabling Yahoo Japan to continuously expand its business in the internet video distribution market, one of Yahoo's core business operations.
Norio Kubota, Director of Fortinet's Japan office, stated, "Following Yahoo Japan's adoption of Fortinet during CDN consolidation last year, we are very proud that its subsidiary GYAO! is now additionally deploying the FortiGate-3700D. As the sole vendor capable of uniquely supporting Yahoo Japan's high-performance requirements, Fortinet protects infrastructure without performance degradation, enabling site visitors to enjoy content freely anytime, anywhere," he concluded.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.

ETRI Develops 200Gbps Photodetector… Initiates Localization of Optical Receivers for AI Data Centers
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has developed a photodetector device that processes optical signals of approximately 200Gbps per channel for the first time in Korea. This device is a component that converts optical signals into electrical signals and determines the reception performance of AI data centers and 5G/6G communication networks. ETRI achieved bandwidth of 70GHz or higher and optical responsivity of 0.75A/W or higher, and integrated an indium phosphide lens on the rear of the chip to enhance optical reception efficiency and alignment convenience. The technology was presented at OECC 2025 and was recently published in the international academic journal 'Optics Express'.

SKT Receives International Standard for AI Data Center Interconnection Structure… Establishes Operating System Standards
SK Telecom's proposed AI data center interworking architecture has received final approval as an international standard at the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) conference. The core of this standard is the classification of AI data centers into three layers—service, management, and infrastructure—and the organization of signaling requirements between layers. As AI service proliferation increases the importance of interworking among various systems within data centers such as computation, power, cooling, storage, and security, this standard is significant in that it presents a common architecture for operations and service delivery. SK Telecom stated that it initiated the relevant standardization project in 2024 and achieved this approval following approximately two years of discussion.
